InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa proves it's ‘queen bee’ with new sustainability initiative

Things are buzzing at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa with the launch of a new sustainability initiative that educates guests about the crucial role bees play in our ecosystem.

The five-star Fiji resort launched the ‘Natadola beehive project’ as part of its ‘Journey to Tomorrow’ sustainability initiatives.

The property has more than 15 beehives, each housing around 60,000 bees, where it draws about 10 litres of raw honey every few months, which is then used in dishes in the hotel restaurant.

The beehive project, led by the resort’s beekeeper Simione Neirube, allows guests to get up close to the honeybees through a two-hour immersive experience, before indulging in a specially curated honey high tea by Executive Pastry Chef, Indrashis Saha.

IHG Hotels & Resorts General Manager, Lachlan Walker says guests will be suited up in full protective gear so they can interact with the bees, handle frames and spot the queen.

“We are thrilled to introduce this incredible experience that not only celebrates the wonders of bees but also emphasises our commitment to sustainability and the planet.”

He says it highlights the critical role of pollinators like bees in sustaining global ecosystems and food security.

“These essential creatures pollinate nearly 90 per cent of the world’s wild flowering plant species and over 75 per cent of food crops, contributing to biodiversity and agricultural productivity.

“It serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect pollinators from human-induced threats, aligning with IHG’s Journey to Tomorrow sustainability initiatives.”
