20 of the world's hottest new luxury hotels in 2024

Spanning Melbourne to Mexico, Singapore to Saudi Arabia, and Nepal to New Caledonia – here are 20 new and upcoming luxury hotels and resorts, set to open in 2024, that have caught the attention of Karryon Luxury.

As the growth in luxury travel continues to surge, so too does the opening of new luxury hotels and resorts around the globe. The trends that emerge from our curated list below include the rising number of hotel brands branching into luxury residential living (for example Waldorf Astoria, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons and Aman). 

Also shining through is the increase in biophilic hotel and resort design; an increased emphasis on incorporating local experiences and culture; and the enhancement of wellness facilities, with resorts and luxury hotels moving far beyond simple spa concepts to offer spaces and experiences more holistic in nature to cater to the mind, body and soul of guests.

2024 will see the first Janu property open (by Aman Hotels & Resorts); as well as the first opening of a Six Senses property in Japan; the first Our Habitas to open in Qatar; the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve to open in the Middle East; and the first 1 Hotel and also Standard Hotel to open in Australia. 

Fans of restored, historic and heritage luxury hotels can look forward to the iconic Waldorf Astoria New York reopening later in the year, after being closed for renovations since 2017. Meanwhile near Salzburg in Austria, Rosewood will take management of the legendary, 15th century Hotel Schloss Fuschl. 

When Ciel Towers opens its doors in Dubai, it will become the world’s tallest hotel; while New Calendonia will see its first major hotel open in Lifou with the April debut of InterContinental Lifou Wadra Bay Resort.

Marking the first One&Only resort to open in Greece, this new resort (opened in November, 2023) is located in the cosmopolitan neighbourhood of Glyfada – just a 30-minute drive to the centre of Athens. The 127-key resort, featuring rooms, bungalows, residences and villas, is located within a 21-hectare beach and forest reserve and along a 2.2 kilometre stretch of coastline of the Aegean Sea. 

The resort takes its design inspiration from the 1960s Hollywood Grecian era. It also features the first Guerlain Spa in Greece, building on  One&Only’s partnership with the nearly 200-year old French beauty brand.

Recently opened in late December, 2023, the 324-key Mondrian Hong Kong is located in the heart of the Tsim Sha Tsui, in close proximity to the West Kowloon Cultural District. Spanning 40 floors, the hotel features 12 two-bay suites, views of Victoria Harbour and state-of-the-art wellness facilities.

Dining options include Carna by Dario Cecchini, a contemporary nose-to-tail steakhouse; and Avoca bar with handcrafted cocktails and a 40th floor rooftop space for cultural collaborations.

In Northern Italy’s South Tyrol, COMO Alpina Dolomites is nestled within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site of the Dolomites mountain range. The resort is located in Val Gardena on the Alpe di Siusi, one of Europe’s largest high-altitude plateaus.  The 60-key, ski-in/ski-out property is a year-round destination, offering experiences that include hiking, mountain biking, and snowboarding. 

Dining options include the casual, outdoors Alpina Chalet; and Sassolungo restaurant, dedicated to healthy dining by COMO Shambhala Cuisine. At the Lobby Lounge, guests can enjoy drinks, small bites, and a complimentary, daily afternoon tea. Its COMO Shambhala Retreat, the signature wellness zone of COMO Hotels & Resorts, offers an expansive wellness program that includes a 22-metre indoor pool, a seven-metre panoramic outdoor pool, sauna, relaxation zones, a fitness centre, and a beauty sanctuary.

Located on the edge of a UNESCO World Heritage-listed Al Reem biosphere Reserve, on Qatar’s west coast, the 42-villa Our Habitas Ras Abrouq has been created in partnership with Qatar Airways. The 42 tented villas, ranging from one to four bedrooms, all feature private pools and large outdoor decks that overlook the Arabian Gulf. 

Other features include a restaurant, terrace lounge, beach club and bar, wellness centre, gym and a water sports centre. Local experiences for guests will include pottery, calligraphy and Al Sadu weaving workshops. The coastal resort is located about a one-hour drive from Qatar’s capital, Doha.

The first Janu property, from the creators of Aman Hotels & Resorts, is set to open in Tokyo in March. The 122-key Janu Tokyo is connected to the heart of Azabudai Hills – described as “a city within a city” with abundant nature, culture and art. Janu, which means ‘soul’ in Sanskrit, is a brand that will draw on Aman Hotels & Resorts’ 35-year legacy.

Janu Tokyo will include eight dining venues, two boutiques and a 4,000-square-metre Wellness Centre that includes one of Tokyo’s largest gyms, a 25-metre heated lap pool, a separate lounge pool, and two signature private Spa Houses.

Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, London will launch in early 2024 as a sister property to Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park. Positioned on Hanover Square, Mayfair’s oldest square, the boutique hotel will comprise 50 guestrooms and 77 private residences.

It will also feature the first restaurant in the UK by award-winning Chef Akira Back; a rooftop cocktail bar; and The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, London that includes an indoor 25-metre heated swimming pool, sauna, vitality pools, experience showers and steam rooms, and gym.

With just 14 beach and overwater villas, Soneva Secret 2024 is the first resort to open in the Maldives’ remote Haa Dhaalu Atoll. Its first guests will be welcomed on 10 February, 2024. The project has been in the making for 30 years. 

Villas include the lagoon Crusoe Villas, accessible only by boat, and the Castaway, the Maldives’ first floating villa. Each villa is designed with direct access to the white sand beach or sparkling lagoon – and each villa comes with a private chef and a dedicated Barefoot Guardian and Barefoot Assistant to curate personalised guest experiences. As well as spacious master suites, including a roof that retracts to reveal the night sky, every villa also features adjoining bedrooms.

Reaching skywards to a remarkable 365 metres high, Ciel Towers, located in Dubai Marina, is set to become the world’s tallest hotel upon completion. Making the most of its uninterrupted views, Ciel in Dubai will include a helipad and an observation deck that offers panoramic vistas across the Arabian Gulf, Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah. 

It will feature 1042 luxury suites across its 82 storeys, and a 300-metre tall interior atrium that will include vertically stacked landscaped and naturally ventilated terraces.

As the first major hotel to be built on New Caledonia’s secluded Lifou Island, the new 50-key resort will span across six hectares of green gardens and untouched tropical forest. IHG worked in consultation with the local tribal owners of the island to ensure cultural connection will be key here to the guest experience. 

Located on the white sand bay of Wadra Bay in the south of Lifou (an outer island of New Caledonia), guests can choose from accommodations in 50 bungalows and villas; dining options in two restaurants where the menus will draw inspiration from the local Melanesian culture and French influence in New Caledonia.

Marking the first Six Senses opening in Japan, Six Senses Kyoto is located in Higashiyama, within walking distance from the Gion district, Myoho-in Temple, Kyoto National Museum, the Sanjusangendo Buddhist Temple – and with the famous 16th-century Toyokuni-Jnja shrine directly opposite. The 81-key hotel will feature simple lines, earthy organic colour tones, and  authentic Japanese traditions and décor. Rooms are organised around a central courtyard, connecting guests to nature through biophilic design. 

The Six Senses spa will provide traditional healing and Japanese Zen culture through its treatments and experiences – including a Ryokan-style welcome and tea ceremonies. Dining options will include a specialty sushi restaurant, brew bar, and cocktail lounge bar.

Luxury eco-lodge The Homestead is located in the Nambiti Private Game Reserve in South Africa. Adopting a contemporary and boutique design throughout the 12-suite lodge, it has been constructed from local stone, with its central feature an elevated structure that houses bars and dining areas, a premium restaurant, infinity pool, and a viewing platform overlooking the watering hole.

Guests will be keen to spot the more than 50 protected mammal species and more than 300 bird species on curated adventures and game drives that can run over several days. Experiences include animal photography classes, hiking, cooking with local ingredients, overnight camping in the mountains, and participation in local, sustainable initiatives.

On the southern coast of Mexico’s Baja peninsula, experience Cabo’s ‘Golden Corridor’ at the new Four Seasons property in Cabo Del Sol. The hotel and adjoining residences have created a modern hacienda-style village, with ocean views throughout.

The design and interiors are inspired by the hotel’s original setting as an agave farm. The hotel will feature seven eateries and bars, including Sora Rooftop bar (pictured). Resort guests will be able to enjoy access to the 728-hectare Cabo Del Sol Course, designed by renowned golf architecture firm, Fry/Straka.

Found within the Red Sea’s Blue Hole cluster, Nujuma, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve will feature 63-shell-inspired villas on a secluded island. Marking the first  Ritz-Carlton Reserve property in the Middle East, the property will also feature four dining venues; Neyrah Spa; a conservation house, designed for guests to connect with Saudi Arabian culture; and the Galaxea Diving Centre that will organise guest water activities including diving, kayaking, sailing, snorkelling and windsurfing. 

Each of the 63 villas offers direct access to the outdoors and include open living spaces, sea-view pools and telescopes for guests to discover Saudi Arabia’s night skies.

As Thailand’s first urban Aman hotel and residences, Aman Nai Lert Bangkok is located amid the skyscrapers of central Bangkok, at the 3.2 hectare Nai Lert Park. Nai Lert was Thailand’s first and most prominent developer, founded his company in 1894 and established the first five-star hotel in Bangkok. 

A 36-storey building at Nai Lert Park on Wireless Road will house the 52-suite hotel and almost 50 Aman residences. Guests will be able to dine at Italian and Japanese restaurants; enjoy cocktails at a rooftop jazz bar; and take sanctuary at the two-storey wellness centre that includes a medical and holistic spa.

Sustainably-focused brand 1 Hotels is set to open its first Australian property when 1 Hotel Melbourne opens at Maritime Place, Docklands on the Yarra River. An 18-storey development will house 120 hotel-branded residences and a 277-key hotel.

At the core of the pet-friendly property will be an extensive wellness centre, while guests will have access to the surrounding 3,500-square-metres of public parklands.

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts has been appointed to manage the legendary Hotel Schloss Fuschl, just outside Salzburg, Austria. Located on the shores of Lake Fuschl, the historic 15th century landmark property will become Rosewood’s second property in Austria when it reopens later this year, following the recent opening of Rosewood Vienna. 

Hotel Schloss Fuschl began operating as a hotel in 1954, but was initially constructed as a castle to serve as a country escape for Austrian royalty, with its original structure dating back to 1450.

The full renovation began in 2022, involving an upgrade to its 98 guestrooms, six chalets, public spaces and grounds. Rosewood Schloss Fuschl will be home to world-class restaurants and lounges and will also feature Asaya, Rosewood’s integrative wellbeing concept.

Regent Hotels & Resorts, acquired by IHG in 2018, will this year open its first property in Bali, set in popular Canggu. The 150-key luxury resort overlooks the Indian Ocean and will include a number of eateries, a wellness spa, and a fleet of Wi-Fi enabled limousines.

Funky and design-driven US-founded hotel brand The Standard, with outposts in New York, Los Angeles and London, is set to open The Standard, Singapore this year. Located on Orange Grove Road, in the vicinity of the Orchard Road shopping district and nearby to the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the 143-key boutique hotel will be home to The Standard’s signature restaurants, bars, and  infinity pool. 

The Standard, Melbourne is also scheduled to open in 2024.

Expected to reopen in late 2024 after extensive renovations since 2017 is the legendary Waldorf Astoria New York. The design of the new-era hotel, which first opened in 1893, has been led by renowned interior designer, Pierre-Yves Rochon. Featuring 375 hotel rooms and 375 private residences, Waldorf Astoria New York will retain its original Art Deco architecture, enhanced with fresh contemporary furnishings as well as and carefully preserved unique hotel artefacts including Cole Porter’s piano. 

Once complete, the hotel will feature some of Manhattan’s largest rooms and suites, as well as a hotel spa that will spa spanning more than 2,787 square-metres, a fitness centre,  a signature restaurant, and restored heritage spaces such as the Grand Ballroom, Jade Room, and Astor Salon.

This new luxury offering from Nomadic Resorts, overlooking the Mt. Everest Himalayan mountain range, at an altitude of 3,280 metres, will see guests bed down in thermally insulated, 52-square-metre domes that include king-sized beds and hot tubs on their outdoor decks. Personal butler service will be provided to guests of each dome; while experiences will include hiking, archery, horse riding, star gazing from telescopes, and spiritual experiences at nearby monasteries. 

A dedicated wellness spa, Tathastu, is named after the Sankrit phrase for ‘so be it’. Personalised wellness journeys and treatments are offered, as well as yoga classes.
