Ponant Explorations has announced a new voyage to Baja California, Mexico, that it spent three years co-developing with local communities.
Departing in winter 2027, the 11-day journey aboard Le Bellot, was created in partnership with local conservation stewards and designed to leave a light footprint.
Ponant Director of R&D Expedition Experience José Saric came up with the idea after he experienced an intimate encounter with a grey whale and her calf, and wanted to share this type of unique experience with guests.
“Creating an itinerary in Baja California was a challenge for me. We have a huge responsibility to share this exceptional environment, to pass it on to future generations, and to show that we are worthy of the trust placed in us by the people who live there.
“What I experienced there compares to no other experience: it’s the powerful feeling of being truly alive, connected to nature, and that’s what our guests will discover.”

Fisherman to conservationist
Saric says former fishermen in the region are now stewards of conservation and have spearheaded the creation of protected areas, leading to the establishment of several national parks.
“By drawing on local communities and their logistical resources for most of the visits and activities offered to guests, Ponant will take part in a positive momentum toward building effective partnerships between authorities, the private sector, and civil society.
“These partnerships must be inclusive, founded on shared principles and values, and place both people and the planet at the heart of their priorities.”

What guests can expect
Wildlife and local cultural experiences will be at the forefront of the itinerary.
Expect encounters with grey whales, bottlenose dolphins and pelicans and swimming alongside Californian sea lions and mobula rays. Blue whales, humpback whales, and orcas also frequent the area.
There will also be visits to small Mexican towns, such as Loreto, to immerse in the local culture.
