Six Senses Fiji launches new marine restoration program for guests

Six Senses Fiji is launching a new marine restoration initiative for guests as part of its partnership with global NGO Coral Gardeners.

Six Senses Fiji is launching a new marine restoration initiative for guests as part of its partnership with global NGO Coral Gardeners.

The new program, ‘Become a Coral Gardener’ means guests can join marine biologists in actively restoring the reef around Malolo Island.

Six Senses Fiji has to date planted more than 20,000 coral fragments in two nurseries in the surrounding marine area.

The new initiative allows guests to be involved in every stage of the process.

From May to October, guests can collect small fragments from nearby colonies and secure them to ropes in the resort’s underwater nursery, and from November to April they can take a guided snorkel to witness the difference between thriving reefs and those affected by bleaching and help clean ropes to remove algae and sediment.

Six Senses General Manager Mark Kitchen says, “Our partnership with Coral Gardeners reflects a shared commitment to regeneration”.

“Through Become a Coral Gardener, guests aren’t just learning about reef resilience – they’re becoming an essential part of it.”

He says once established these corals attract a diverse array of marine life including turtles, which naturally help maintain a balanced ecosystem.

Six Senses Fiji became part of Coral Gardeners in 2023.

The organisation’s aim is to expand coral restoration around the world and “empower the local communities to become coral gardeners as part of a bluer economy”.
