The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, a Belmond Train, Europe has unveiled a new sleeper carriage designed by world-famous artist JR.

Set to debut in 2025, L’Observatoire will be the first artist-designed carriage on the legendary train and the most spacious accommodation available.

JR’s lifelong fascination with trains heavily influenced the design. He also drew inspiration from his Parisian art studio, century-old craftsmanship, astronomical observatories, and Renaissance Europe’s cabinets of curiosities.

“With L’Observatoire, passengers can enter my world,” JR said.

“The curved corners and round windows create intimate spaces for daydreaming. Guests can experience the magic of being inside an artist’s creation while travelling on the most legendary train. This artistic journey is unlike anything seen before.”

The carriage unfolds into distinct areas, each meticulously detailed by JR.  A luxurious bedroom with a double bed, an ensuite bathroom, a wardrobe, a reclining daybed, a lounge area, and a library stocked with books curated by French publisher Gallimard are featured throughout.

Hidden compartments and secret messages are layered within the intricate marquetry, with the aim to offer a sense of discovery and wonder for passengers.

“I wanted to create layers of hidden details that spark curiosity and ignite the imagination,” JR explained. “From secret compartments to hidden messages, there’s so much to discover in this carriage, it’s impossible to experience it all in one trip.”

“Trains have always been a canvas for me,” JR said. “As a child, I’d watch the world go by from the window. It’s like travelling through different worlds. When I became an artist, I realised trains could transport my art. It’s like sending a message in a bottle.”

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express was built in the 1920s and 1930s. Its carriages were designed by renowned Art Deco figures such as René Prou and René Lalique.  JR’s meticulous restoration of Sleeping Car 3553 honurs the train’s heritage while infusing it with his contemporary artistic vision.

“Working with artisans and respecting the era’s motifs wasn’t a limitation,” JR said. “I wanted to create a timeless artwork, like something an artist from the 1920s would have made.  True craftsmanship is eternal.”

Gary Franklin, Belmond’s Vice President of Trains & Cruises, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. “We’re thrilled to work with JR, who shares our passion for the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express,” he said. “L’Observatoire embodies our commitment to reinventing train travel and perpetuating the art of slow luxury.”

L’Observatoire is set to join the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in 2025.
