Feeding a "starved" route: Rex adds new Adelaide-Brisbane flights in October 2023

Rex will commence daily direct flights between Adelaide and Brisbane on 30 October 2023 with the brand-new route adding an extra 128,000 seats per year between the two capitals on its Boeing 737-800NG aircraft.

Rex will commence daily direct flights between Adelaide and Brisbane on 30 October 2023 with the brand-new route adding an extra 128,000 seats per year between the two capitals on its Boeing 737-800NG aircraft.

Brisbane Airport Corporation CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said the Rex Adelaide-Brisbane flights will boost domestic travel options for Brisbane travellers.

“The Brisbane to Adelaide market has been starved of capacity and is currently sitting at 88 per cent of pre-COVID levels,” he said.

“[The new route] will instantly restore it to 99 per cent capacity, which is very welcome news for travellers.”

This is the third new route for Rex in three months and follows the additions of Adelaide-Sydney and Melbourne-Hobart services.

It means Adelaide is now connected to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, while Brisbane has direct flights to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Adelaide Airport Managing Director Brenton Cox welcomed the airline’s continued investment in South Australia.

“Adelaide Airport is back to pre-pandemic domestic passenger numbers and climbing, so this new service is very timely,” he said.

“Rex has opened a further pipeline for Queenslanders to discover South Australia and once again created more choice for South Australian travellers heading to Queensland.”

Rex Deputy Chairman John Sharp said: “Step by step, our footprint is gradually growing as we continue to spread our wings so we can achieve our goal of flying to, and between, all of our capital cities.”

The domestic carrier scooped Airline of the Year and Safety Innovator of the Year at the Australian Aviation Awards on 31 August 2023. Rex’s flying school, the Australian Airline Pilot Academy, also won Flight Training Business of the Year.

The airline recently reported a $60 million-plus turnaround in its FY23 report.
