Nude tourists blamed for Malaysia quake

Two Canadians are being blamed for causing the 6.0 magnitude quake in Malaysia last week, after they exposed themselves to the sacred Mount Kinabalu.

The earthquake shook the country’s highest peak on Friday morning, sending rocks and boulders on tourists and hikers.

So far, there have been 13 confirmed deaths, while six more are still missing.

Shortly after the quake, the two siblings from Saskatchewan were told they wouldn’t be able to leave the country for their ‘disrespectful act’, New York Post reported.

The two individuals were identified as being part of a group of climbers that took naked photos atop of the mountain and posted them on the Internet.

According to Malaysia’s Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Pairin Kitingan, the individuals’ behaviour was disrespectful towards the sacred mountain, which lead to the quake.

The Malaysia Government has not detained the brothers, but has placed a ban on them along with three other foreigners from leaving.

Phil Sylvester, travel safety specialist at TID (Travel Insurance Direct), said this incident is a reminder that travellers should be aware ‘they’re not at home’ when travelling for new destinations.

“The rules and social norms may be different to what they’re used to. It pays to do a little research before landing in a destination.”

“TID’s Tripwise app has tips on culture and social expectations. Forewarned is fore-armed.”

He continued, explaining that if these two Canadian tourists and their friends are detained, they’re likely to face heft fees and other financial losses from missed flights and lost deposits.

“Missed flights and lost deposits for other travel is not covered by travel insurance if it’s because you’ve done something illegal.”

In the meantime, the Malaysia’s leaders are working to rebuild structure damage caused by the quake in the town of Ranau.

Climbing activity at the 4,095 meters above sea level mountain have also been prohibited until further notice.

Posing naked near popular tourist destinations seems to have become a fad amongst young travellers.

Earlier this year, two tourists were banned from visiting Cambodia after they were caught taking nudies in the ancient Angkor Wat temples.

Egypt was also searching for a couple of tourists who are believed to have filmed a porno near pyramids.
