We’ve rounded up our favourite British dishes that will keep you warm throughout winter. And no, it’s not all about pimm’s and cucumber sandwiches.
Whether you’re looking for a satisfying meaty pie or a plate of Scotch eggs, we’ve included a few classic British meals for you to try that will get rid of any winter blues.
No wonder they call it ‘comfort’ food!
10. Traditional English breakfast
We call this the Full Breakfast here in Aus, but this hearty breakfast meal originated from our Motherland and is better known as the Full English Breakfast.
Containing the usual goodies but with a black pudding in the works.
9. Scotch eggs
There’s nothing new about the combination of sausage and eggs, but sometimes it’s good to go with what works.
In concept, scotch eggs are incredibly simple – an egg wrapped in sausage then breaded and deep-fried. Sounds like a dream!
8. Yorkshire pudding
Yorkshire Pudding is made from batter and usually served with a roast and gravy.
Frying a few slices of bacon will give you enough fat to cook your Yorkshires, as well as a much-deserved snack for the cook.
7. Fish and chips
Almost as soon as chips appeared in England they were paired with battered fish, and a cultural icon was born.
With the over-fishing of cod, other fish are being used more commonly so there’s all the more excuse to keep revisiting the chip shop.
6. Bangers and mash
This dish is a British icon that’s been described as the “working class hero’s meal.” Bangers” are pork sausages and “mash” is short for mashed potatoes.
If a hearty sausage with buttery warm taters doesn’t get you salivating, then top it off with fried onions and gravy. Mmmmm.
5. Toad-in-the-hole
Toad in the hole is a traditional British dish consisting of sausages in Yorkshire pudding batter, usually served with vegetables and onion gravy.
4. Sheperds pie
Where would British food be without some of the classics, and Shepherd’s pie has to be one of them.
Everyone loves this hearty, filling dish which also happens to be relatively cheap to make. Use beef instead of lamb and you have a Cottage pie – easy.
3. Bedfordshire Clanger
The Bedfordshire clanger is a dish from the county of Bedfordshire, in England. It is an elongated suet crust dumpling with a savoury filling at one end and a sweet filling at the other comprising a main course and dessert in one package.
2. Scones and jam
Britain isn’t Britain without tea, and tea isn’t tea without scones. Sweet and savory, covered in clotted cream and jam or simply served warm with butter, scones are eternal favorites.
1. Strawberries and cream
Since the spotlight will be on Wimbledon next month, we need to end this list off with the classic strawberries and cream.
It is a tradition that whilst players swing their racquets on the court, onlookers find their own sweet spot consuming some 28,000 kilograms of strawberries topped with 7000 litres of dairy cream over two weeks.
