Queensland can expect to welcome more visitors from that fast growing Asia market with new direct flights between Cairns and Korea.

The state’s tourism leaders with Tourism Australia have entered a new agreement with Korea’s budget airline, Jin Air, for new seasonal services to the tropical destination.

Commencing December this year, the carrier will operate twice-weekly flights between Incheon Airport and Cairns’ international gateway.

Tourism Australia’s Managing Director, John O’Sullivan, expects the direct service will further capitalise on visitor and spend growth from Korea.

It’s no surprise Australia’s tourism leaders want to attract more Korean visitors, with around 250,000 Koreans spending some $1.4 billion in the country for the year to March 2016. That’s around $5,600 per person.

“Having additional air services gives us a further boost to build on the fast growing Korea market.”

He continued, saying it’s a “terrific opportunity” for Korean travellers, by giving them direct access to Tropical North Queensland where they can “experience the reef and rainforests of the region”.

Jin Air’s new Cairns flights are the latest in a strong of new direct services between the destination and Asia. Others include Hong Kong Airlines’ new year-round flights and SilkAir’s direct three times weekly Singapore-Cairns services.
