Austrian airline, People’s Viennaline, made headlines in November when it launched flights from St Gallen in Switzerland to Friedrichshafen, Germany.

Although at first it appears to be just another European service, on closer inspection you realise that the 50-seat Embraer 145 aircraft is only required to travel 21 kilometres each way, making it a total flight time of eight minutes.

The speedy service costs travellers around €40 one way, but according to Friedrichshafen Airport’s Chief Executive, Claus-Dieter Wehr, it hasn’t been performing so well.

Which is why as of 14 April the route will be terminated.

Although sad news for Europeans, it’s good news for Air Tahiti, which can reclaim to the title of the ‘world’s shortest flight operator’ with its 10-minute servic from Moorea to Faa’a Airport.

Another surprisingly short service goes is Ethiopian Airlines’ 20-minute flight between Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Brazzaville, Congo.
