What Aussies love & hate about flying

Aussies can't wait to go on their next holiday, that is until they start thinking about those crying babies, long waits and ancillary charges.

Aussies can’t wait to go on their next holiday, that is until they start thinking about those crying babies, long waits and ancillary charges.

A new study has revealed what Aussies like and dislike about flying and it’s what you’d expect with a little bit extra.

According to 76 percent of respondents that took the TripAdvisor survey, uncomfortable seating and limited legroom in aircraft is among their least favourite things about flying.

More than half of respondents said added fees such as baggage and selection charges were their second least favourite thing about flying.

And then there’s those crying babies.

It’s really not their fault their parents decided it was time for a holiday, but those shrills at 35,000 feet is detested by some 55 percent of travellers.

But of course, you can’t go past a list of flying without noting the unpredictable flight delays, which were disliked among 56 percent of respondents.

Plus there’s the long security and customs lines, which put off 40 percent of people.

Things travellers say they’re not looking forward to in flying is rumours of shrinking seats, which 79 percent are ‘strongly opposed’ to.

Given shrinking seats, it comes as no surprise that the biggest improvement travellers want is more space.

Top three amenities travellers say would make the air travel experience better are more legroom; more space between other passengers; and more comfortable seats.

Now that the negative stuff is out of the way, let’s fly on over to the positive side.

Around 77 percent of people said they absolutely love flying because it means they’re heading to a new destination and over half are excited by it because it brings them a sense of adventure.

Around 35 percent love in-flight amenities, while another 32 percent (who I image hog the window seats) love looking out of the plane’s window during take-off and landing.

Another favourite aspect of flying for around 25 percent of respondents is the chance to take a break from work and the Internet (why are airlines working so hard to introduce in-flight Wi-Fi again?).

When asked about the top air travel improvements over the past five years, travellers gave ease of booking flights and the opening of new flight routes to new destinations as their top choices.

Top five biggest improvements in air travel include the ease of booking online (sorry agents – we love you guys if that’s any consolation); comparison shopping on flight search sites; number of flight itinerary options; and in-flight entertainment options.
