From discussions across our desks at work to musings over a beer down at the pub, It’s the passionate debate that for all of us, never seems to end. Where’s the best place to live in Australia?

Closely followed by, ‘Where’s the best place to live in the world?’

So guess what. Well forget New York, Paris, Tokyo or London. Turns out it’s none of those places.

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual global liveability rankings for 2015 have just come out with Melbourne named the world’s most liveable city for the fifth consecutive year.

Surprised? Perhaps not, especially if you live in Melbourne.

Is it the open spaces, the culture and the cleanliness? Or the fact that Melbourne has the most baristas per capita than any other city in the world? There are seemingly many reasons why the Victorian capital sneaked across the line to beat Austria’s capital Vienna by just 0.1 point and take out the top title once more.

Melbourne’s got it going on – for the fifth year running

If you’re wondering how they decide the annual rankings (presumably not over a few beers down at the pub), put simply, the index crunches 30 factors related to things like safety, healthcare, educational resources, infrastructure and environment in 140 worldwide cities.

Cool Radelaide came in at an impressive joint fifth together with Calgary, which was the third Canadian city in the top five alongside Vancouver and Toronto.

Quirky Adelaide has plenty of global star attraction

Good old Sydney and Perth both made it again into the top 10 in seventh and eighth spot whilst Brisvegas came in at a very respective 18th in the world.

Sydney didn’t win the race, but still has plenty left in her

All up the 2015 rankings put four Aussie cities in the top 10 worldwide, followed by Canada with three in the top 10 and New Zealand taking out one spot at no.10.

An incredible result for Australia and Canada, but it doesn’t really say a lot for the rest of the world when it comes to living there. Turns out Australia really is the lucky country after all. We done good.

So where were the worst? That’d be Tripoli, Lagos, Port Moresby, Dhaka and Damascus for starters, all of which were ranked as the five least liveable cities from the 140 ranked.

The top 10

  1. Melbourne
  2. Vienna
  3. Vancouver
  4. Toronto
  5. Adelaide
  6. Calgary
  7. Sydney
  8. Helsinki
  9. Perth
  10. Auckland
