On the third day of the ‘Rendez-vous New Caledonia’ pre-famil the group of Australian and New Zealand wholesalers and travel media explored the Northern Province’s beautiful community – Hienghene.
Day three of the pre-famil took the group through the Hienghene region towards Poum in the northern part of New Caledonia.
The area is well-known for its beautiful waterfalls, lagoon, coral reefs, amazing caves and deserted beaches.
Kayaking in Hienghene
In order to experience the natural beauty of Hienghene, one of the day activities included a visit to Nord Adventure where the owner Christophe gave everyone a warm welcome and an introduction to kayaking in the area.
After getting into the kayaks Christophe’s guided tour took the participants across to the recognisable rock ‘Le Poule’ or the ‘The Brooding Hen’ where the water was crystal clear.
During these guided tours it’s common to spot both turtles and sharks.
Driving through Hienghene
The Northern Province Hienghene has one of the world’s most outstanding sites in the UNESCO World Heritage listed ‘North East Coastal Area’ which includes New Caledonia’s highest mountain Mont Panie rising 1,628 metres above sea level.
Driving through the region there are fantastic limestone formations on Linderalique rocks stretching a few kilometres east along the coast from ‘The Brooding Hen’. You will see plenty of them either from the same viewpoint, or even closer up, from the actual main road.
Along the road towards Poum the group stopped at the James Cook landmark which is situated a few hundred metres from where the famous Captain arrived in 1853 when he first discovered New Caledonia.
Hienghene is famous for its rich vegetation and from the main road you are able to see several majestic waterfalls.
Ka Waboana
At lunch it was time to stop at the Ka Waboana Lodge which is situated close to Office de Tourisme de Hienghene. The lodge offers a stunning view over the water from the bungalows which are all built on a hill side offering incredible tranquility.
In the Ka Waboana Lodge restaurant the friendly staff was serving up traditional hearty island food including meat and fish which was smoked and prepared on an outside BBQ.
