In an online statement, Theresa May encouraged locals and visitors to stay vigilant and called for changes to online policies, which would allow democratic countries to identify and shut down any websites used to spread extremist ideology.

“We cannot allow this ideology the safe space it needs to breed. Yet that is precisely what the internet – and the big companies that provide internet-based services – provide,” Theresa May said.

“We need to work with allied, democratic governments to reach international agreements that regulate cyberspace to prevent the spread of extremism and terrorist planning.

“And we need to do everything we can at home to reduce the risks of extremism online.”

“Third, while we need to deprive the extremists of their safe spaces online, we must not forget about the safe spaces that continue to exist in the real world.”

In the meantime, Metropolitan Police have increased security around the capital and have closed off affected areas from the public as investigations continue.

“A large cordon remains in the area around London Bridge and Borough Market and there are many officers on scene, as we need still to carry out a thorough search of the area to ensure that everyone has been accounted for, and to make the whole area safe.”

“I appreciate this has been a terrifying experience for many people, and I would like to thank the people affected in that area for their forbearance as we carry out our work.”

Despite recent events in the UK, the nation’s tourism industry is standing strong with a recent report revealing that attractions in the UK were among the most visited in the world last year.

The Themed Entertainment Association report released earlier this month found the British Museum in London was the sixth most visited museum in the world, while The National Gallery and Tate Modern in London came in as the eighth and tenth most visited.
