In true, innovative fashion, Virgin Atlantic christens its 787-9 Dreamliner with a flight over the Atlantic and a live gig at 39,000 ft.
If the celebration of the inaugural flight of Virgin Atlantic’s Dreamliner is anything to go by, Branson sure knows how to party.
The airline launched their first 787-9 Dreamliner by flying 264 lucky passengers from Heathrow, London to Atlanta, Georgia.

In true Branson fashion, guests were entertained by UK chart toppers, Rudimental and electronic music duo, Gorgon City who played their set in the ‘upper class bar’ – making it the first gig to ever be staged at 39 000 ft.
So us mere mortals left to only imagine what experiencing live music soaring through the clouds would be like, the airline live streamed the gig over the Atlantic Ocean – another world first.
The #Flightdecks gig, was live streamed via the plane’s wifi system.
Guests were also fed samples from the upper class menu by coveted chef, Lorraine Pascale.
“Thirty years ago, we launched Virgin Atlantic with an eight-hour-long party, from Gatwick, London to Newark, New Jersey, and it was the most fun I’ve ever had on a flight,” Branson said on the company’s website.
“Yesterday’s launch of our 787-9 Dreamliner service proved the spirit of revelry is still alive and well at the airline – from talking to many of the people who were on board, it sounds like it was tremendous fun too.”
Virgin – a party that has lasted 30 years.
The aircraft named Birthday Girl, in homage to Virgin Atlantic’s 30th birthday, features the airline’s ‘Flying Lady’, who is carrying a celebratory champagne coupe.
Virgin’s first regular commercial flights on the Dreamliner will be between London Heathrow and Boston starting Tuesday.
