Australian Travel Agent turned DJ - Alan Tubery celebrates Eurovision

What's a Travel Agent to do when he loves Europe and he loves the decks? Ditch the day gig and live out the life-long dream of performing for millions of Eurovision viewers.

What’s a Travel Agent to do when he loves Europe and he loves the decks? Ditch the day gig and live out the life-long dream of performing for millions of Eurovision viewers.

That’s what 63-year-old, Alan Tubery, did back in 2012 when he left his role as Head of Sales at Swiss & Europe Travel to follow his Eurovision goals.

He started working for himself with his own set of clients, which not only gave him the finances to fund his dream, but the flexibility to spend three months of every year in Europe.

From around April to June, Tubery ditches (not completely) the GDS in favour of turntables to perform at Europe’s biggest music competition.

Over the weekend, he spun tracks such as ABBA’s Dancing queen in Stockholm to music fans and even had the opportunity to meet Australia’s very own contestant Dami Im.

So many years playing at the musical spectacular also gave him the opportunity to meet previous winners such as Conchita Wurst and perform at parties attended by Princess Mary.

Eurovision breaks twitter record

Over the weekend, the annual #Eurovision song contest captured the world’s attention, with more than seven million Tweets shared globally, taking the title of most Tweeted #Eurovision contest in history.

With #Ukr crowned the winners of the competition in a list-minute nail-biter, knocking #Aus hopeful Dami Im (@damiandmusic) from the top spot.

Ukraine’s win was the Tweet peak of the night, with almost 73,000 Tweets being sent per minute, breaking the record previously held by Georgia in 2015.

Dami Im captured the attention of the world, with her performance generating 46,000 Tweets Per Minute, smashing Ukraine’s Tweet Per Minute rate, which peaked at 38,000. The #AUS hashtag was also the most used hashtag in comparison to the performances from other countries.

If you could be anything other than a Travel Agent, what would it be?
