In an online statement, the carrier said flights would be affected on all continental and intercontinental today as well as some continental routes tomorrow.

Lufthansa apologised for the inconvenience to travellers and said it is working hard to “keep the impact as low as possible”.

Yesterday, some 900 flights were cancelled, affected around 100,000 travellers. The number of service cancellations is expected to rise to around 1,800 before the end of today.

Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) organised industrial action over an ongoing pay dispute with Lufthansa, which sees the union attempting to secure a 3.7 percent pay rise for its members, while the carrier is hoping to sign off on 2.5 percent over six years until 2019.

Jörg Handwerg, a member of the VC Executive Board, said the airline is “showing no movement” and is yet to submit a “negotiable offer”.

“The Board of Management is not only suffering from its own employees, but also its customers under this uncompromising business policy.”
