Travel-mad Zoe Macfarlane shares her life on the road as a digital nomad, this week she comes to you with some great advice on what to do with 48 extra hours in New York.
New York is a fairy-tale destination where everything is possible – the movies have shown us that. We’ve seen attractions like Times Square, the Empire State Building, and Central Park so many times on the big screen it feels like déjavu when you finally get there.
The essence of NYC is experienced away from the big attractions and thrum of tourists. Of course, you’re not going to (and shouldn’t) skip the iconic stops, but if you have extra time, use my tips on what to do with 48 additional hours in the Big Apple.
DAY ONE
Get High
You’re already buzzing about being in New York, but another way to get high is to visit the High Line. This 1.5-mile park runs along an old railway route above West Manhattan’s streets, showcasing art, nature, and design.
Get Your Freak On
Keep walking south to Black Tap Soho if a rainbow cake atop a milkshake or lavish burger sounds like a bit of you. You might want to explore Soho in-between your Instagram-worthy burger and decadent freakshake – both are huge. Better than choosing though, right?
On Location
A TV show or movie probably spurred you to NYC so give thanks by location hunting. For Sex and the City fans, visit Magnolia Bakery. For both Gossip Girl lovers and Friends fans, Bloomingdales is a must. For Seinfeld, this free self-guided tour has you covered. There are also dedicated tours to make those iconic TV moments your reality too.
Skyline’s the Limit
Round out your day feasting on a delectable 3-course meal at Manhatta. Located on the 60th floor of the Liberty Building this is a dreamy restaurant experience with epic Manhattan views. We love the bonus ‘no tipping’ policy.
DAY TWO
But First, Coffee
Get a saucy start to your day at the Brooklyn Roasting Company on Flushing Ave. Sustainable brews, vintage vibes, and the décor gives a nod to the former residents, the infamous JJs Navy Cocktail Lounge. Love it.
21st Century Bargains
Century 21 offers discounted fashion to make that humble brag back home a reality. “Oh, this? I just picked it up in NYC.” Century 21 Brooklyn is a far more sober (read: less crazy) retail experience than their Manhattan store.
Urban Eats
For the best, most stomach-satisfying way to understand Brooklyn, join the Brownstone Brooklyn food tour. Intrepid’s Urban Adventures pair local history with delectable neighbourhood treats, including bread, cheese, and cookies. It’s a fodder for the mind and the waistline.
Reach New Heights
Trust me; a walk is necessary after that afternoon snackathon so waddle to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. Here, you can snap one of the city’s best views of the Manhattan skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty.
Beer’s Eye View
If you’d like a more effortless way to take in the vista, Harriet’s Rooftop is my pick. If you’d prefer something more urban, Gran Electra does a mean margarita in a lush garden setting.
WHERE TO STAY
Your NYC Sanctuary
New York is often an assault on the senses, so your accommodation needs to serve as your haven. The James NoMad, sandwiched between Madison and 5th Ave, is at the forefront of the wellness hotel scene. They offer in-room yoga sessions, workouts, and mindfulness, plus a CBD snacking menu.
