THE RUNWAY RINK: An Ice Skating Rink Has Opened At JFK Airport

The newly opened TWA Hotel at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport has just opened the Runway Rink, a one-of-a-kind ice skating experience set on a frozen tarmac.

Visitors and guests can take a spin on the tarmac around the hotel’s 1958 Lockheed Constellation Connie airplane (now a cocktail lounge).

The custom 56-by-44-foot Runway Rink (made with good old frozen New York City tap water) will operate seven days a week through the end of February.

There will also be an Arctic-themed ice skating show on offer, taking inspiration from Connie’s history (she spent time as an Alaskan bush plane dropping supplies in the Prudhoe Bay).

The Runway Rink will also offer frosty beers, Sno-Caps candy and an array of other snacks and beverages.

Admission is US$15, US$10 for kids under 12. Ice skates can be rented for $US10 (kids under 12 rent for US$8).

Advance purchase tickets are not available, but they do offer packages for groups and kids’ parties.

The rink will be open Monday through Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 4 to 10 p.m. It will also be open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

It is built into the old winged TWA terminal at JFK Airport, seeing the terminal emerge out of its retirement and given a new lease of life in May.
