Scenic eclipses the luxe cruising industry with a world-first feat, taking guests underwater by submarine to witness the rarely seen Diel Vertical Migration off the Oaxacan coast in Mexico and marking the first commercial night dive by an expedition ship.
Nature-loving guests on board Discovery Yacht Scenic Eclipse’s submarine embarked on a night-time dive on 5 November to witness the rarely seen Diel Vertical Migration.
The natural phenomenon is the largest vertical migration on Earth where millions of fish larvae make a 300m, hour-long ascent in search of food.
Scenic Neptune, Scenic Eclipse’s onboard, custom-designed, all-electric submersible, allowed cruisers to be the first general public visitors permitted to explore the depths.
The historic moment took place during the 14-day Baja and Costa Rica Discovery sailing, which departed on 28 September 2022.

Scenic Director of Expedition Operations Jason Flesher said: “We were given rare permission to undertake the night dive, providing our guests with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be surprised and delighted with this unique underwater viewing.”
“This was the first-ever night dive in a submersible to take place in Huatulco and the first commercial night dive for any expedition ship.
“What makes these Scenic Eclipse Discovery Voyages so special is the fact that we offer guests the means to visit places that are typically inaccessible.”
Earlier this year, Scenic Eclipse was the first to complete a submarine dive in South Georgia.
