Air travel is on the up with domestic bookings now at 92 per cent and international bookings at 82 per cent of pre-COVID levels, according to Webjet data.

Aussies are also opting to explore their own backyard this summer with domestic air travel accounting for 74 per cent of peak holiday bookings from 1 December 2022 to 31 January 2023.

Queensland tops the list of Aussie air travel destinations, representing 36 per cent of all domestic travel followed by Melbourne (29%) and Sydney (20%).

When it comes to international bookings, trans-Tasman travel to New Zealand and the South Pacific is trending, making up 41 per cent of all overseas bookings.

On average, Aussie travellers are taking domestic holidays of seven days’ duration and spend 16 days away on international trips.

The data comes as new research by Finder found around a third of Australians (36% – equivalent to 7.2 million people) were deterred from travelling due to soaring airfares and rising travel costs.
