Thompson Palm Springs has now opened its doors, ushering in a new era of sophisticated stays in downtown Palm Springs. Karryon Luxury had a sneak peek of the 168-key hotel back in May with the finished property more exquisite than expected.
The highly anticipated hotel channels the city’s famed modern architectural attributes as a gateway to the Design District and a new lifestyle destination for creativity, dining and connection in its own right.
On a site inspection in May 2024, we toured the hotel under construction (hard hats and all!), viewing the modular, geometric-shaped exterior and a display suite with bespoke Mid-Century-style furniture, 500-thread-count linens and full minibars with local treats.
Part of Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, Thompson Palm Springs General Manager Jeffrey Miller told Karryon that the desert city hotspot is a growing, year-round destination for travellers and a key market for the New York-based brand.
“Between Modernism Week, the International Film Festival, nearby music festivals and more, the city is a hub for exploration and continues to trend amongst top destinations,” Miller said.
“With Thompson Palm Springs now open, we look forward to adding to the downtown experience as a cultural, connection, creativity and culinary hub and bringing something special to life for a diverse array of travellers and locals.”
What’s inside Thompson Palm Springs
Ideally located on Palm Canyon Drive with the perfect street vantage point for the Greater Palm Springs Pride Parade, the new hotel spans 2.5 city blocks and features two outdoor pools.
The low-slung hotel (buildings are capped at four storeys in Greater Palm Springs, however the Kimpton had special dispensation) features 168 bungalow-inspired guestrooms, including accessible rooms and 18 suites, all with private balconies.
At the top end is the sprawling 162sqm, two-bedroom Thompson Suite featuring a generous patio balcony with mountain and Palm Canyon views.
Desert influences are infused into hotel interiors with soft neutrals offset by brass fixtures and vibrant hues while signature D.S & DURGA amenities scent the suites.
Succulents in all shapes and sizes stud the outdoor areas while hanging lights lend an inviting ambience against the skyline and San Jacinto Mountain range.
The Upper Stories adults-only tower, consisting of 42 guestrooms and five suites, will allow exclusive access to a private pool and lounge when it opens later this year.
Standout onsite features include the Middle East-inspired, all-day Lola Rose Grand Mezze restaurant and outdoor pool club overlooking the mountains, an expansive retail space and a fitness studio with Peloton and TRX equipment.
A HALL Napa Valley Tasting Room will open by the end of 2024, showcasing Southern Californian drops, with a second Mediterranean restaurant, Bar Issi, to follow in early 2025.
Unsurprising, art is at the heart of the new pet-friendly property with a USD$3 million custom collection of genre-crossing local and international works sourced by Shore Art Advisory.
The hotel façade features a shimmering, rainbow-hued glass-tiled mosaic by renowned Indigenous artist Jeffrey Gibson, complemented by Cahuilla Indian artist Gerald Clarke’s striking, wall-mounted sculpture in the lobby.
Miller added: “Thompson Palm Springs infuses new energy into the rich cultural heritage of Palm Springs, offering a place where everyone who walks through the door feels welcome and at home.”
