Australia’s most reliable major airline? Virgin Australia nails on-time performance yet again

Virgin Australia achieved its best monthly domestic departure on-time arrivals and its best in two years with 84.4 per cent of flights arriving on time in April 2025. The carrier also achieved an almost 100 per cent (99.3%) flight completion rate in the same month.

The latest Bureau of Infrastructure & Transport Research Economics (BITRE) on-time performance (OTP) data for April 2025 found the Virgin Australia network (Virgin Australia and Virgin Australia Regional Airlines) recorded 84.4 per cent on-time arrivals and 84.3 per cent on-time departures.

In good news for flyers across all domestic carriers, April 2025’s on-time arrivals figure was higher than the long-term average for all routes (80.7 per cent) and the on-time departures figure was also above the long-term average (81.8 per cent).

BITRE found the rate of cancellations was also lower than the long-term average of 2.2 per cent.

VA remains the most reliable major Australian carrier this year, taking out the top OTP spot in three of the four months recorded so far in 2025.

For all VA-designated services, Virgin Australia also recorded one of the lowest cancellation rates at 0.7 per cent for April 2025.

VA Chief Operations Officer Chris Snook said fewer than one in 100 flights were cancelled in April 2025.
