Sydney’s new luxury lifestyle precinct, a 10,000-square-metre building incorporating restaurants, retail and event spaces, has been officially named ‘The Lands by Capella’.

Opening in Q1 2026, the former Department of Lands building is located between Circular Quay, Macquarie and George Streets.

Along with neighbouring Capella Sydney, the five-star hotel inside the former Department of Education building, the two heritage-listed properties are the first mixed-use development in Australia, and one of the largest privately funded tourism infrastructure projects in NSW.

Pontiac Land Group CEO David Tsang says, “The Lands by Capella highlights our continued commitment to creating extraordinary places where history, craft, culture, and local community are honoured.”

“Restoration and conservation works are being meticulously carried out to honour the trust placed in Pontiac Land Group, and showcase our commitment to celebrating Australian heritage, art and culture.

“The reawakening of Sydney’s cherished Sandstone buildings will not only welcome visitors in for the first time, but also become the common ground for travellers and locals alike to connect.”

NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism, Stephen Kamper adds, “The naming of the Department of Lands building marks a defining moment in the evolution of the Sandstone Precinct as a world-class destination”.

“This landmark transformation of one of Sydney’s most celebrated heritage sites will only further activate and rejuvenate Circular Quay.

“The Lands by Capella is a stellar example of what can be achieved when public and private sectors work together for outcomes that respect the past while looking boldly to the future.”
