Australian travellers looking for a luxurious Bali escape will have a new five-star option from May 2026, with the launch of upscale resort, Umi, located just 200 metres from Uluwatu Beach.
Meaning “sea” in Japanese, Umi will feature 92 modern suites and seven private villas, all offering pool views and surrounded by 1.5 kilometres of tropical gardens. Room categories include Deluxe Suites (30m²), Superior Suites (40m²) and Family Suites (70m²).
Owned by Australian entrepreneur Danil Flehan, Umi features a design that takes inspiration from Uluwatu’s U-shaped sea caves at Suluban Beach, with three cascading infinity pools following the natural slope of the land.
Beyond Umi’s three-tiered pools, guests can access ten additional pools at nearby beach clubs and cliffside venues.

Another standout feature of the property will be the sculptural planter boxes that wrap the exterior, blending lush greenery with clean lines.
“At Umi, we want to give guests an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and offer a sanctuary immersed in Bali’s beautiful environment,” Flehan said.
“Bali’s natural beauty has been honoured in every detail at Umi, from the architecturally designed building to the delicious meals in the restaurants, to the beautifully made souvenirs crafted by locals.
“We look forward to sharing this experience with visitors once the doors open next year.”
According to the resort, a major drawcard will be the hotel’s signature restaurant, led by Executive Chef Michael McGairy. His experience includes time at Teja Uluwatu and as a private chef for A-list celebrities on Lizard Island. At Umi, menus will blend Japanese, Australian, Indonesian and Middle Eastern influences.

Beyond the restaurant, Umi will feature a curated retail space that showcases Balinese artisans, offering signature scents (like frangipani and sandalwood), locally made handbags, and design-forward souvenirs, among other keepsakes.
The resort will also boast sustainability in its construction, using recycled teak furniture made from offcuts used on European superyachts, provided by Wright Super Yacht Teak.
Set in the heart of the Bukit Peninsula, Umi will be close to spas, restaurants, beach clubs and surf breaks including Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Dreamland and Bingin. The resort is situated around 25km from Bali’s Denpasar airport.
To celebrate its opening, Umi is offering early bird luxury packages for two starting at $1,699. The all-inclusive deals include airport transfers, gourmet meals, massages, unlimited cocktails and more.
