Anantara to make Japan debut - here's what it'll look like

The Anantara brand is heading to Japan, with a nature-inspired retreat planned for the popular alpine resort town of Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture.

Operated by Royal Minor Hotels, the upcoming Anantara Karuizawa Retreat will mark the brand’s debut in the country and is set to open in 2030.

Set across 10 forested acres facing the picturesque Mount Asama, the luxury low-rise property will feature a total of 51 keys. This includes 23 expansive suites and 28 keys housed within luxury two- and three-bedroom villas, which are also under consideration for branded residence offerings. Sizes will range from 60 to 270 square metres.

The retreat will also feature a full Anantara Spa and onsen, three dining venues, and a suite of wellness, leisure and meeting facilities, including a pool, library and fitness centre.

Located just over an hour from Tokyo via the Hokuriku Shinkansen (bullet train), Karuizawa is already a popular escape for Tokyoites and international visitors, including an increasing number of Australians.

Known for its cooler summer climate, skiing in winter and lush scenery year-round, the area offers easy access to hiking, golf, hot springs and attractions like Kazakoshi Park.

As part of that long-term plan, Royal Minor aims to open 21 hotels in Japan by 2035 across three brands – Anantara, Avani and Tivoli.

Hiroyuki Kiuchi, President and COO of List Development Company, which will partner with Minor Hotels on the project, said it is an honour “to bring the renowned luxury hotel brand Anantara to Japan for the first time”.

“Karuizawa is one of Japan’s premier resort destinations, offering excellent access from the Tokyo metropolitan area as well as rich natural surroundings and beautiful seasonal landscapes,” he added.

“We were particularly drawn to its global recognition and the growing demand among affluent travellers seeking high-quality experiences.

“The site also enjoys a rare vantage point overlooking Mount Asama, a symbol of Karuizawa, and we are confident that introducing the Anantara brand in this exceptional location will provide guests from Japan and abroad with a truly enriching and luxurious retreat.”

“We will do our utmost to ensure that Anantara Karuizawa Retreat becomes a new landmark for the area and contributes to the revitalisation of the local economy.”
