American Express opens Japan’s first Centurion Lounge at Tokyo Haneda Airport, its 30th globally

American Express has just opened its first Centurion Lounge in Japan at the country’s busiest airport, Tokyo Haneda.

American Express has just opened its first Centurion Lounge in Japan at the country’s busiest airport, Tokyo Haneda.

Officially opening its doors last week, the Haneda Centurion Lounge is the brand’s 30th globally and fourth in Asia. But as the first Centurion Lounge in Japan, it adds a welcome touch of luxury, local flair and calm for an ever-growing number of Aussie travellers connecting through Tokyo.

Spanning nearly 700 square metres, the new lounge stands out with its blend of refined design and functionality.

Located in Terminal 3, the space draws inspiration from “Japan Blue” – the deep indigo shade found in traditional “Aizome” dyeing. Guests will notice the feature woven through slatted timber, stone and walnut accents.

Elsewhere, a stunning Edo-Kiriko glass chandelier and Uroko ceramic tiles bring local artistry into the design, while commissioned works by Japanese artists not only add cultural depth but also support earthquake-affected regions in Japan.

“The Centurion Lounge at Haneda Airport celebrates Japanese culture, featuring custom artwork, an exciting menu that showcases the flavours of Tokyo, and my personal favourite – private meditation booths to help you recharge and find some calm before your flight,”  American Express Travel President Audrey Hendley says.

“We’ve seen incredible demand for travel to Japan, it is one of the destinations where we’ve seen the highest growth recently. We look forward to showcasing the impeccable service Centurion Lounges are known for in a destination we know is so important to our card members.”

What travellers will love first, says American Express, is the food.

Michelin-experienced Chef Satoshi Ogino leads a live, open kitchen, while guests can watch sushi, ramen and seasonal dishes being prepared fresh.

Meanwhile, a sweets bar celebrates Japan’s wagashi tradition alongside speciality teas, while a full bar features Japanese beers, sake, shochu, wine and inspired cocktails

But American Express hasn’t forgotten practicalities. Within the lounge are private phone booths that double as meditation pods, complete with calming soundscapes.

In addition, high-speed wi‑fi and plentiful USB outlets serve business travellers well, with seating options ranging from cosy couches to group rooms with TVs – perfect for families or small teams.

Elsewhere, a Centurion-only VIP section offers Kumiko-style woodwork and a private beverage station, ideal for quieter moments.

“Long awaited by our eligible card members, we are thrilled to open Japan’s first Centurion Lounge at Haneda Airport,” American Express Senior Vice President, Japan Country Manager, Yasuhiro Sudo said.

“We look forward to providing a best-in-class experience with high-quality meals, a wonderful atmosphere, and local charm to eligible Japanese card members and eligible card members from all over the world.

“We are committed to delivering the exceptional customer experience American Express proudly offers and is known for.”

The lounge also aligns with American Express’s global expansion, adding to their portfolio alongside new locations in Salt Lake City, Newark, and Amsterdam.

For Australians flying to Japan, the lounge is a timely addition. Haneda is growing as a gateway for Aussies, and this new space adds comfort and choice.
