UK’s first city-based wellbeing resort gets green light

Planning permission has been given for the $512 million Therme Manchester - UK's first city-based wellbeing resort.

Planning permission has been given for the $512 million Therme Manchester – UK’s first city-based wellbeing resort.

The new project comes as the booming wellness real estate market reached $548 billion in 2024 and is forecast to double to $1.1 trillion by 2029, according to the Global Wellness Institute.

Construction on the A$512 million Therme Manchester is expected to begin later this year and should be completed in 24 months.

The resort will include “large family and adults-only zones with swimming pools, slides, warm water lagoons and multi-sensorial saunas”.

There will also be water-based fitness classes, “evidence-based” wellness therapies, botanical gardens, immersive art, urban farms and educational activities to create an integrated wellbeing concept for all ages”.

Transformational wellbeing at the core of new build

Therme Manchester CEO Professor David Russell says, “Our ambition is to make a positive difference in millions of people’s lives whilst creating a new wave in urban living”.

Leader of Trafford Council, Councillor Tom Ross says, “This leisure development is the first of its kind in the country and we are delighted it is being built here in Trafford”.

“The resort will attract millions of visitors each year. The development sits a short walk from the latest Metrolink extension and supports several of our key commitments by improving health and wellbeing, providing connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians, creating a new public realm, and regenerating a vacant brownfield site in a sustainable location.”
