Planning a trip to Taiwan? From 1 October, Australian travellers will face a small but crucial new step before boarding their flight.
The Taiwan government has introduced a Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC), which must be completed online within three days prior to arrival.
The digital card replaces the old paper-based arrival card system and is designed to speed up processing on the ground.
The TWAC application form captures basic information including passport details, travel dates and accommodation. According to the Smartraveller website, it should be submitted online through the Ministry of the Interior National Immigration Agency website.

The new requirement is compulsory for all visitors, but it is not a visa, as Taiwan has a visa-exempt entry scheme for nationals of designated countries, including Australia.
Travellers who forget to complete the TWAC could face delays on arrival, so travel advisors are encouraged to remind their clients before they travel.
The change comes as the Asian nation continues to invest in improving visitor experiences, streamlining border processes and welcoming back international travellers.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) advises Australians to “Exercise normal safety precautions in Taiwan” – the lowest travel alert level.
A recent study by Agoda revealed that Taiwan is one of the cheapest destinations in Asia, with hotel room rates averaging just $137 per night.
