As tensions in Iran escalate, the Australian government has issued a new blanket alert for Aussies passing through the Middle East region.
In its update, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) states that the situation in the Middle East remains “unpredictable” and “could get worse with little warning”.
“Security risks may increase. There may be travel disruptions within the region and globally. Make sure your travel insurance covers you,” it advises on its Smartraveller website.
And its warning isn’t just confined to the Middle East, with “safety and security elsewhere” potentially impacted.
“There is a risk of reprisal attacks and further escalation. Protests and civil unrest may happen globally,” it states.
To minimise Australians’ risk, the department advises Aussies to be especially vigilant in highly touristed areas, around embassies and where other “foreign interests” are located.

For air travellers, the government warns that the “closure of airspace around transit hubs in the Middle East may impact flights globally”.
“It may cause flight delays and cancellations, including on routes to Europe,” it says.
“Your travel plans may be affected, even if your destination is not in the Middle East. Contact your travel agent or airline to confirm your plans.”
The government says roads and borders could also close without notice.

Earlier this month, DFAT issued a fresh warning for Iran as numerous airlines cancelled flights amid escalating tensions in the Middle Eastern nation. At the time, the cancelled flights impacted services to major hubs including Dubai, Doha and Istanbul.
According to The National, international flights in the Middle East continue to be suspended or rerouted amid threats by US President Donald Trump that the United States would launch fresh attacks on Iran. Among the carriers to have cancelled flights are KLM and Lufthansa.
