YHA is rethinking youth travel with a new Sydney stay built for climbing, co-working and connection

YHA Australia is taking a fresh run at youth travel with a Sydney concept built around co-working, community, craft beer and a 10-metre climbing wall.

MODE by YHA is due to open in March 2027, with bookings expected to launch from mid-year. The new brand will bring 137 private ensuite rooms across four floors, with King, Queen, Family and co-living configurations.

The Sydney property will also feature flexible co-working areas, communal dining spaces, immersive social zones and an on-site microbrewery.

At the centre of the property will be The Forum, a double-height amphitheatre designed as the main gathering space. The area will shift throughout the day, moving between casual dining, co-working, live performances, events and community experiences.

Built for the new youth traveller

YHA Australia says MODE by YHA has been designed as a “social activator”, bringing together mixed-use accommodation and shared spaces shaped around connection, flexibility and experience-led travel.

MODE by YHA’s social hub will include a 10-metre climbing wall, co-working spaces, communal dining areas and an on-site microbrewery.

The concept follows changing behaviour among younger travellers, with YHA pointing to Skyscanner’s 2026 Global Gen Z Research, which found 47 per cent of young travellers would consider travelling overseas specifically to meet new people.

For YHA, MODE expands the role of accommodation beyond the room itself, placing social spaces, programming, work areas and local connection inside the stay.

YHA Australia CEO Paul McGrath said travel had always been about connection for the organisation.

“MODE by YHA represents a more ambitious expression of that idea and where we see the future of hospitality heading,” he said.

“We’re seeing a clear shift away from transactional accommodation toward experience-led stays that foster belonging, flexibility and meaningful connection.

“MODE by YHA responds to a growing gap between traditional hotels, hostels and co-working spaces, creating a flexible social environment designed around the changing modes of the modern traveller.”

Part of YHA’s wider evolution

MODE by YHA will operate as a standalone identity while remaining connected to YHA Australia’s broader focus on affordable, sustainable and community-focused travel.

YHA Australia has operated for more than 85 years and now has 18 properties across the country, spanning urban hubs, coastal stays and eco-retreats.

MODE by YHA will feature 137 private ensuite rooms across King, Queen, Family and co-living configurations.

The for-purpose, membership-based organisation is B Corp certified, with its national property network Eco-Certified by Ecotourism Australia. It is also part of Hostelling International, which connects travellers to more than 3,000 properties across more than 70 countries.

Recent investment has included property renovations across key city locations in 2023 and 2024, the launch of the YHA Explorer app in late 2024 and the introduction of digital wallet keys in 2025.

MODE by YHA is scheduled to open in Sydney in March 2027. Updates and launch details are available via the MODE by YHA website.
