A&K Sanctuary has opened Kitirua Plains Lodge, a 13-suite property on a private concession bordering Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, in the same corner of the country where Geoffrey Kent led A&K’s first safari in the 60s.
Kitirua Plains Lodge, the newest property from Abercrombie & Kent’s Sanctuary collection, has opened its doors.
The lodge, bordering the Amboseli National Park, is the same area where a young Geoffrey Kent led the safari that became the blueprint for A&K’s luxury adventure model.
Set within a private conservancy below Mount Kilimanjaro, it sits on one of Africa’s most concentrated wildlife corridors, home to elephant herds of up to 100, lion, leopard, cheetah and more than 400 bird species.
The property has 11 one-bedroom suites, each with indoor and outdoor showers, freestanding bath and private veranda, plus two two-bedroom suites linked by a shared lounge for multi-generational travel.
The Explorer’s Lounge is an open-fronted bar and dining area with views of the savannah, where guests will have five-course à la carte dinners from seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and a weekly Boma Braai under the stars.
When not on safari, the wellness lodge is the place to be, the “most considered in the A&K Sanctuary portfolio” where treatments draw on Africa’s botanicals, minerals and oceans, rooted firmly in Maasai tradition.
The lodge runs off-grid on solar power with backup generator and inverter systems, and has been built within an existing wetland rather than displacing it in what A&K says is the brand’s “most architecturally adventurous Sanctuary property to date”.
Kitirua Plains completes A&K Sanctuary’s Kenyan trio alongside Olonana Lodge in the Maasai Mara and Tambarare Camp in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, creating a circuit across three ecosystems: the Mara’s great herds, Ol Pejeta’s rhino conservation and Amboseli’s elephant country.
