Are pink-coloured 'womens-only' airport parking spaces sexist?

A German airport is in the middle of a sexism debate after unveiling its women’s only car parking spaces featuring pink paint and wider bays.

While gender-only designated spots would be enough to cause outrage, the airport added insult to injury by painting the spaces pink and making them wider for easier maneuverability.

But that’s not all. The spots have received brighter lighting and are located closer to the terminal at Frankfurt Airport.

While some women welcomed the convenient parking spaces, others have dubbed them ‘sexist’ and a means of reinforcing stereotypes, Sky News reported.

An editor for ‘Wheels for Women’ magazine described the move as ‘patronising’.

Airport bosses defended the move, saying local law requires them to dedicate at least five percent of their public car parking to women only.

A spokesperson continued saying it’s up to female drivers whether they choose to use the spaces or not.

“The measures we have taken do make female drivers feel safer in our car parks, and add to the quality of customers’ stay here.”

“Both our male and female customers also expect us to provide such parking spaces “so in our view they’re necessary.”

People have taken to Twitter to share their opinions.

Among them is Mike Cullen who said people are complaining about ‘extra space’ and ‘colour’.

Another Twitter user said she thinks the parking spaces are ‘great’.
