All passengers on board Cathay Pacific’s flight CX170 arrived safely and unharmed in Bali today after one of two aircraft engines shut down mid-flight.
The A330 was carrying 254 passengers and 13 crew from Perth to Hong Kong when the number two engine suffered a ‘defect’.
According to a statement from the airline, the aircraft landed safely in Denpasar International Airport at 3.39am (local time) and even taxied to bay normally despite the issue.
A passenger on the aircraft, Joel Sirna, told media he had spotted flames while flying as well as ‘sparks flying out of the motor’.
“Everyone remained calm surprisingly except for a few.”

Cathay Pacific assured KarryOn that there was no engine fire or fire warning and what passengers saw was ‘light due to the engine failure, not a real fire’.
The airline continued, explaining that fire services met the aircraft upon arrival in Denpasar as a ‘precautionary measure’.
“There was no fire onboard. All passengers and crew are safe and unharmed.”

Cathay said it is investigating the cause of the shut down.
In the meantime, passengers are being provided with hotel accommodation and alternative flights to their final destinations.
“Safety remains Cathay Pacific’s highest priority, and we apologise for the inconvenience caused to passengers.”
Earlier this week, Cathay revealed plans to increase services to Australia with an additional flight to Adelaide. Read on.
