58% of Aussies change travel plans due to high costs & challenges but it’s good news for advisors

New research shows high costs and travel challenges such as flight delays and cancellations have caused the most disruptions to Aussies this year with 58 per cent saying they will adjust their plans to adapt to the current uncertain travel landscape.

New research shows high costs and travel challenges such as flight delays and cancellations have caused the most disruptions to Aussies this year with 58 per cent saying they will adjust their plans to adapt to the current uncertain travel landscape.

But some of the factors contributing to disruptions and delays could see more people book with travel professionals to mitigate these high costs and challenges.

The Money survey found 48 per cent of respondents had experienced at least one travel disruption since November 2021 with transport delays topping the list at 29 per cent.

Sixteen per cent also experienced cancelled flights or other transport, opted out of a trip due to high prices (9%) or had lost or delayed luggage (7%). Six per cent were hit by unexpected fees or fell ill while travelling.

A higher proportion of young travellers had travel disrupted or lost luggage this year, possibly due to choosing cheaper airlines and other travel services.

More than half of under-30s surveyed (58%) experienced at least one travel disruption, followed by 55 per cent of those aged 31–50 and 34 per cent of over-50s.

Older Aussies choose to forego flights with 19 per cent going on drive holidays versus five per cent of under-30s.

Other actions taken to adapt to the new, disruptive environment and high costs included travelling in non-peak periods to minimise disruptions (22%) and taking shorter holidays (8%). Travellers will also stay in cheaper accommodation (7%) and travel with less reputable airlines or to cheaper destinations (an equal 4%).

How advisors can help

Travel Agent

In 2023, travel agents will continue to be crucial to advise travellers looking to save money and avoid disruptions.

Like road trips, cruises offer value for money with more ships and capacity now available as the cruise industry rebounds.

Travel professionals can also book customers with reputable airlines and source accommodation packages that offer more bang for their buck.

Comprehensive travel insurance will also be vital to protect travellers’ health as well as their luggage and belongings. Agents are often the first port of call for travel insurance policies and can advise clients how to avoid costly risks.
