By Sponsored Stories18 Oct 2017In the tiny Bavarian hamlet of Oberammergau, thousands of people from all over the world meet every 10 years to witness a powerful stage performance called the Passion Play – a magnificent work of art performed by 2,000 local Oberammergau residents. The experienced team at Collette have been helping religious travellers experience the magic of Passion Play for years, and if you have any enquires for Passion Play 2020, these are the guys you need to contact. Not only do they have all the connections for the best hotels and best tickets, but they can also organise group bookings and answer any of your questions. But just in case you’re unfamiliar with the once-in-a-decade event, here are six things you need to know about it… 1. IT’S A PASSION PLAY (THE STORY OF JESUS) This epic stage performance tells the story of the life and death of Jesus Christ through dramatic performances, beautiful music and choral accompaniment. It’s a magnificent work of art, paying homage to perhaps the most influential figure in Western civilisation. 2. THE PLAY RUNS FOR APPROX. 6-7 HOURS The Passion Play is an epic story about Jesus Christ, so you’d expect the play to last longer than 30 minutes. In fact, it lasts for about six to seven hours. But fear not, as you’ll have a dinner break mid-way through, and Collette guests will be taken to a local restaurant to feast on local Bavarian fare – yum! 3. ITS BEEN HELD EVERY DECADE SINCE 1634 If you thought the Lion King had been on stage a long time, then you’ll be absolutely gobsmacked to learn that the Passion Play has been performed every decade since 1634 – that’s nearly 400 years! According to local lore, the villagers made an appeal to God in the early 17th century to stop the village succumbing to the Bubonic Plague. They vowed that if God saved them, they would perform a Passion Play every 10 years. Since making that vow, not a single person died of the Plague. 4. ONLY LOCALS CAN BE PART OF THE PRODUCTION Keeping the authenticity of the nearly 400 year play in check, a cast of around 2,000 locals are only allowed to be part of the production of the Passion Play. The Passion Play is performed in an auditorium that seats around 4,500 people, with the comfortable seats set on an incline, providing everyone with a good view. 5. ONLY A FINITE NUMBER OF TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE Each decade, the popularity of the Passion Play grows, and global demand for tickets for the 2020 performance is expected to out-run supply very, very soon. That’s why it’s recommended to reserve a ticket as soon as possible so you don’t miss out. Tickets can be reserved with a deposit of just $50 per person to be front of the line. 6. COLLETTE HAVE 7 TOURS THAT FEATURE THE PLAY The Collette AU team with Jesus.
