Antarctica holds a special place in most adventurers’ hearts. Whether it’s the region’s ‘last frontier’ reputation, the yearning to visit a place like no other, or for the penguins (aww), it’s one of the world’s most desirable travel destinations. Our friends at Aurora Expeditions have given us their top 9 Antarctic experiences, plus tips on how to save up to 25%* for the ‘23-24 season!

Aurora Expeditions have been sailing polar oceans for over 32 years, gliding their purpose-built ships to some of the world’s most exhilarating places.

With wildlife to spot and adventures to go on (and boy, do they offer some life-changing adventures), we asked Aurora Expeditions for their top 9 highlights on an Antarctica expedition.

#9 Following in Shackleton’s footsteps

We love the plight and pluckiness of polar explorers, though unsure we would be brave enough to actually be one. We love, however, that you can follow in their footsteps with Aurora Expeditions’ Shackleton’s Crossing. All without losing any creature comforts!

With experienced Expedition Leaders, passengers can opt to retrace the challenging 1916 South Georgia crossing made by Sir Earnest Shackleton and co. It’s a perfect adventure for alpine trekkers, mountaineers, history buffs, and Instagrammers alike!

#8 Experiencing Spectacular Ice Formations

One of the perks of being on an Aurora Expeditions’ purpose-built ship is that it has been specifically designed to travel to, and see the best of, the world’s most remarkable polar destinations. These ships are ideal for witnessing never-to-be-repeated glacial icescapes pass by – think floor-to ceiling windows and multiple open decks with expansive 270-360 degree views. In short, there is NO shortage of spaces to take in the majesty of the incredible world outside!

And if you want to get a little closer to the spectacular landscapes – enjoy everything from Zodiac cruises, guided hikes and add-on activities like sea kayaking and polar snorkelling.

#7 Zodiac cruising in search of wildlife

Witnessing wildlife in Antarctica is 100% a drawcard for travellers. Seeing creatures from afar versus up close are two different things, however. This is why Aurora Expeditions’ Zodiacs are an integral part of an expedition.

Skilled Zodiac drivers navigate Antarctica’s icy landscape for maximum wildlife-spotting opportunities. There’s something truly satisfying about taking a Zodiac cruise into inaccessible areas to seek out penguins, seals, and whales going about their day.

#6 Playing penguin bingo

How well do you know your Chinstrap penguin from your Gentoo? Or your Adelie from Macaroni?

Thanks to informative educational talks on board and Aurora Expedition’s expert guides, you’ll soon be playing penguin bingo. With 18 Southern Hemisphere’s to spot, the fun lasts for the whole expedition.

#5 Whale watching in your pyjamas

Picture this: you’re tucked in bed, dreaming of ice floes and Emperor penguins when a loudspeaker announcement calls: “Whales spotted starboard”. Would you be mad to be roused from your slumber? We didn’t think so!

Sometimes on an Antarctic expedition you don’t have to leave the ship (or change out of your flannel PJs) to experience an unforgettable wildlife encounter! This is thanks to the skilled Expedition Teams and their ability to spot and respond to wildlife doing their thing at any moment.

#4 Whizzing down the slopes

Did you know you can ski and snowboard in Antarctica? Forget heading to Queenstown or Whistler, how about checking off not only another ski slope but another continent on your skiing quest?!

The ultimate rush for any experienced ski or snowboarder is to create fresh tracks and Antarctica offers just that from October onwards. Whizz down the slope to the pristine bays below filled with icebergs and penguin colonies. Magic!

#3 Ice camping

If connecting with nature is your vibe, camping on the ice is a must! From the comfort of a thermal sleeping bag, to witness the majestic Antarctica night sky. We probably don’t need to say there is zero light pollution down here, do we?

As the sun rises on a new day, perhaps a breaching whale or bustling penguin will choose to be a part of your ice camping dawn chorus.

#2 Scuba diving

Scuba divers love to add big fish to their PADI dive log for bragging rights. In Antarctica, you’ll add big ice, too!

There’s nothing quite like diving into Antarctica’s icy depths to see the blues hues and underbelly of a colossal glacier or ice wall. It’s astounding! You may also enjoy the company of curious seals, penguins, and possibly whales, with any luck.

#1 Joining the polar plunge club

It’s an Antarctica rite of passage to take the polar plunge, where you purposefully jump into the icy cold sea (under supervision, of course)!

We’re all familiar with the health benefits of ice bathing by now. With the polar plunge, however, you’ll also get a shot of vodka, a hot tub spot, and admission to the exclusive polar plunge club!
