Thornton was named joint Hospitality and Tourism Executive of the Year at CEO Magazine’s 2018 Executive of the Year Awards, which recognises the exceptional contributions made by CEOs, managing directors, and senior management.

CEO Magazine praised Thornton for his efforts in increasing business revenue and profits (AU$341 million and AU$10.7 million), while keeping staff content (81 percent employee engagement score) and making a conscious effort to protecting the planet.

Thornton said he was humbled by the recognition, and was proud to lead a group that puts as much effort in meeting growth and milestone targets as it does in sustainable environmental and cultural practices.

Thornton was also shortlisted for the major award, CEO of the Year, that was later won by Talent International’s head honcho, Mark Nielsen.
Intrepid Travel has also been awarded Best Family Tour Company at the Family Travel Magazine Awards.
