Now in its 11th year and recognised as Australia’s leading digital travel industry media brand and community, Karryon broadcasts up-to-the-minute high-quality news and features, social and branded content and multi-channel campaigns for our industry-leading travel partners.
We have exciting plans for 2024, including the launch of our Karryon Luxury vertical, an expansion of our events business and more. We are now on the hunt for a full-time, Sydney-based News Writer to work in the Karryon Newsroom.
Your mission will be to assist the News Editor in creating timely, balanced, and relevant travel industry news for our audience. You will play an integral part within the Storytelling team in evolving karryon.com.au as Australia’s leading travel industry trade brand through news-editorial excellence and building a narrative around our ‘Together In Travel’ mantra.

Here’s what you’ll need to apply:
- Minimum of 2-3 years experience working on a trade/consumer digital publication or with a fast-paced, digital lifestyle publication
- Tertiary qualifications in journalism/communications
- A love for travel, its endless possibilities and the role it plays in making the world a better place
- Passion for social media and digital storytelling
- Sound writing skills, proofreading skills and a strong knowledge of grammar etc
- Meticulous attention to detail and thirst for facts and accuracy in your reporting
- Respect for consistency and the willingness to follow editorial style guides and formatting preferences across all of Karryon’s channels
- Basic-medium knowledge of SEO principles
- Dynamic, worldly approach and context to your work
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent time management skills and experience working in a fast, deadline-driven environment
- Ability to both follow directions and show initiative
- Understanding of storytelling best practices across various platforms, such as websites, newsletters, social media, etc.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Take daily direction from the Newsroom Editor in terms of daily story coverage and news priorities
- Write, edit and publish in WordPress your own newsroom stories on a daily basis across all Karryon channels, including scheduling on social media
- Assist and support the Newsroom Editor in the daily process of building and scheduling the daily eDM send
- Schedule social media for stories and trade social events across all channels
- On occasion, write deeper-dive feature stories, interview pieces, and trend stories around the travel industry
- Connect with the travel industry and travellers to interview, network and seek news angles/coverage
- Collaboratively work with other areas of the business to achieve common goals, including the Partnerships & Production team, Events team, and Editorial team to achieve common goals
- When required, represent Karryon at industry events, conferences and trips
- Embrace Karryon’s vision to diversify into broader storytelling opportunities, including video.
What will give you the edge?
- Extensive previous experience in digital media and preferably a newsroom environment
- Knowledge and passion for the travel industry
- Experience in Google Analytics and writing for SEO
- Strong personal brand and following across social media
- Photography/editing skills
- Video editing skills and someone comfortable in front of a camera
