Vivid Sydney installation gives visitors the chance to help save The Reef

Australia’s threatened Great Barrier Reef will be front of mind at Vivid Sydney this year thanks to the new interactive light sculpture, Revive The Reef. Visitors will be invited to step into a magical underwater landscape and work to unwind the pressures threatening the Reef.

Inside the thought-provoking installation is a virtual reef landscape, surrounded by coral, thousands of light refracting fish and a soundtrack which plays real sounds from the Reef.

Together with others participating in the installation, visitors can turn handles (formed in the shape of coral), to unwind the pressures threatening the Reef.

With each turn of the handles, the environment will slowly transform from bleached white into an explosion of brilliant colour and sound.

Revive the Reef is the brainchild of Qantas and technology agency S1T2, inspired by the Flying Roo’s new carbon offset program.

S1T2 co-founder Tash Tan said that giving people the chance to interact with the installation was critical to raise awareness that everyone can play a part in saving the Reef.

“The interactive experience in Revive the Reef allows every passerby the chance to shape their own unique narrative – with every turn of coral you are beginning a dialogue between yourself and the art.”

S1T2 co-founder Tash Tan.

Tash said the goal was to tell a story of empowerment.

“No matter how big or small our actions are, we can make a difference and protect the things that matter most,” he said.

The artwork took over 500 hours to create is made up of  32,736 individual LEDs and 8184 lights spanning over 136.4 metres in length.

A Qantas spokesperson said the installation was a great example of how by working together, even small actions can make big changes.

From World Environment Day on 5 June until the end of Vivid Festival, for every social post that includes the hashtag #ReviveTheReef, Qantas will offset the carbon emissions for a customer’s flight between Sydney and Cairns.
