As Pablo Picasso famously said, “Learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist.” It wouldn’t surprise us if this was the quote that inspired Salzburg’s artHotel Blaue Gans to break the mould.

Instead of filling Salzburg’s oldest inn with antiques and olde-mementoes, they created a modern masterpiece within their thick, whitewashed walls. It’s fabulous.

Guests are encircled by Salzburg’s rich history without having to compromise on comfort or modern aesthetics.

On the doorstep of this urban hideaway is Alstadt, Salzburg’s old town. Walk to everything notable from the doorstep of this old-but-new boutique property.

Over 100 attractions and 150 restaurants are within half a kilometre. Within minutes you can be exploring the Salzburg Museum, people watching from Kapitalplatz, or riding the cable car to epic views. Rise early to have the Golden Mile to yourself.

Also, can you get any more cultured than sleeping on the same street that Mozart once did? We didn’t think so.

While guests receive free entry to the Museum of Modern Art, it’s contestable whether it’s needed. The hotel itself is a creative oasis! Aside from the aesthetics of parquet floors, old beams, and hip, modest furnishings, 120 modern masterpieces fill the hotel.

Bridge the gap between history and history-in-the-making as you wander the narrow 660-year-old corridors. Contemporary works of art – from painting, sculptures or photographs – fill the place. All rooms are individually decked-out with modern art too.

“EATING IS A NECESSITY, BUT COOKING IS AN ART.” – GESINE LEMCKE

It’s not just modern artists that have put Blaue Gans on the map. Their decision to hire Austrian-renowned chef, Martin Bauernfiend has elevated their cuisine offerings too.

The intimate Gewölbe offers Austrian classics, like wiener schnitzel and tafelspitz. The freshest herbs make it your plate from the hotel’s first-floor courtyard.

If the weather is promising, reserve your table at Blaue Gans Open Air. The imposing Mönchsbergwand views add a sense of intrigue to your evening.

“A WORK OF ART IS ABOVE ALL AN ADVENTURE OF THE MIND.” – EUGENE IONESCO

Sometimes the greatest creativity is found in simplicity. Sooooo, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share the Brasserie Bar’s pun-tastic Gans and Roses cocktail. Almost compulsory to try, right?

If you’re lucky, the old jazz cellar – Wine Archiv – will be open for a special occasion when you stay.

“ART IS TOO IMPORTANT NOT TO SHARE.” – ROMERO BRITTO

The high rollin’ culture opportunities aren’t limited to within the artHotel Blaue Gans walls. There’s also that free entry to the Museum der Moderne. With a fantastic hillside location, it’s worth a visit for the views and picture-window restaurant alone. Of course, the four floors of 20th– and 21st-century art also impress.

Instead of hiking 500m up the hill, take the adjacent Mönchsberg lift up. Other guest facilities include access to free bicycles and a complimentary tea bar.
