While the Sound of Music put Salzburg on many travellers’ wishlist, it does not define the city. In fact, many locals may not call it one of their favourite things as visitors often skip Salzburg’s other beloved attractions.
We’re all about balance so we’ve got the skinny on other ways to make your heart sing with our spectacular 48-hour Salzburg sojourn.
DAY ONE
“LET’S START AT THE VERY BEGINNING”
Start your day at à Grünmarkt and pick up a pretzel that’s bigger than your face. This traditional farmer’s market, running since 1857, offers your first glimpse of daily Salzburg life.

With pretzel in hand, find a seat in Kapitelplatz and watch the city come alive. The views of Hohensalzburg Fortress and Austria’s Northern Alps form a majestic backdrop. If you need a caffeine fix to accompany your head-sized goodie, Kaffee-Alchemie delivers.
“TILL YOU FIND YOUR DREAM”
Wind your way on foot through the narrow cobblestone streets and baroque architecture of Salzburg’s UNESCO Old Town. While we prefer getting lost to uncover gems, be sure you pass the Old City Hall, Mozart’s birthplace, and Salzburg Cathedral.
“CRISP APPLE STRUDELS”
Understanding Salzburg’s love of sweet treats unlocks more of the city’s cultural secrets so book into the Edelweiss Cooking School. Their lunch class demonstrates how to make scrumptious apple strudel and Salzburger Nockerl.

A lot of the Salzburg’s sights are steeped in history; for contrast, visit the remarkable marble-and-glass Museum of Modern Art. In a cliff-top setting, the museum has four levels dedicated to contemporary art.

Conclude your first day by dining in Europe’s oldest restaurant. St Peter has been serving award-winning meals for over 1,200 years, balancing traditional and creative contemporary cuisine.
DAY TWO
“CLIMB EV’RY MOUNTAIN”

If you prefer less crowded lookout points, skip Hohensalzburg and take an early cable car to Untersberg, instead. After a 10-minute summit ride, experience awe-inspiring vistas across Salzburg and beyond. Hiking trails also start here.
“MY FAVOURITE THINGS”
It would be bad manners to skip Salzburg’s other sweet treat – Mozart Balls. More delicious than the name suggests, Mozartkugel are pistachio, marzipan, and nougat treats coated in chocolate. For a pick-me-up, stop by Café Konditorei Fürst.
“FORD EVERY STREAM”
Salzburg has a surprising number of accessible pristine green spaces; the 75m Golling Waterfall is only 30 minutes by car. The fit can also hike to the top. While there, admire Golling villages’ postcard-worthy traditional buildings, and 13th-century castle.
“A DRINK WITH JAM & BREAD”
Salzburg is Austria’s beer capital, with a 600-year-old brewing history. You can make a pub crawl out of the city’s 11 breweries but you may find a guided brewery tour a more sensible proposition.
“AUF WIEDERSEHEN, GOODNIGHT”

We couldn’t really see you skip the Sound of Music! Sternbräu Restaurant offers its Sounds of Salzburg show with traditional Austrian meal. Mozart was an old regular here, though obviously without singing along to Von Trapp songs after his meal!
