This hilly city of northern California is vibrant, edgy and fun. It’s full of some of the world’s most famous landmarks, boats an excellent food and drink scene and has plenty of natural beauty.

Here’s 10 experiences not to be missed on a trip to San Francisco.

 

1. THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

The iconic, world-famous bridge is one of most photographed things on Earth. The orange engineering marvel is strikingly beautiful and towers as high 65-story building. Make sure you take the time walk or cycle the entire length of the 1.7-mile bridge.

 

2. TAKE A ROOFTOP BAR CRAWL

Holding a cocktail in hand while taking in sweeping city views from one of San Francisco’s many vibrant rooftop bars is an experience not to be missed during your stay. Some include on your bar crawl list are El Techo de Lolinda, Jones and The Pearl.

 

3. VISIT ALCATRAZ

This former prison, located on an island of the same name in the middle of San Francisco Bay was once home to some of the country’s most notorious criminals.

The prison was shut down in the 1960s but the stories that remain about Alcatraz are spine-tingling. For an extra thrilling experience book a night tour of the buildings and grounds.

 

4. RIDE A CABLE CAR

You cannot visit San Francisco without taking a cable car ride. This is, after all, where they were invented some 150 years ago. The cars are considered a ‘rolling landmark’ because they are the last remaining manually operated cable car system left in the world.

 

5. CHINATOWN

San Francisco is home to one of the oldest Chinatowns in the United States. Pass through the iconic Dragon’s Gate to uncover a collection of historic buildings and mazes of streets filled delicious places to eat.

 

6. VISIT THE SEA LIONS AT PIER 39

After the 1989 earthquake, California sea lions began hanging out on K dock at Pier 39. For 30 years these loud, playful creatures have been returning to the same spot.

 

7.  LOMBARD STREET

Known as the most crooked street in the world, the inclines and curves of this one-way road pass by some of San Francisco’s most expensive real estate including incredible Victorian mansions.

 

8. HIKE UP TWIN PEAKS

Hike up to this set of high peaks in the centre of San Francisco to uncover phenomenal 360-degree views stretching right across the city, the bay and the ocean.

 

9. TAKE A DAY TRIP TO THE WINERIES

Set aside a full day to explore the nearby Sonoma and Napa wine regions. There are many small groups and private tours to chose from to uncover these beautiful and well-respected viticulture regions.

 

10. THE SAN FRAN FERRY BUILDING

The Ferry Building Marketplace and its nearby farmer’s market are true epicurean experiences. Arrive hungry because you’re about to sample the foods from some of Northern California’s best artisan food and wine producers then enjoy a feast from one of the many restaurants or food vendors.
