The Mission
Named for Mission Dolores founded in 1776, this is San Francisco’s oldest neighbourhood and home to some of its hottest new restaurants and galleries. Known for its incredible Mexican restaurants, this is one place you don’t want to miss. The Mission looks and feels much different than the rest of SF – it’s even known for having clear skies and missing the fog! Check out stunning city views from the rooftop bar, El Techo, explore the incredible murals depicting the history of this area, or join the locals on a sunny day at Mission Dolores Park.
Haight-Ashbury
Walking distance to SF’s beloved Golden Gate Park, Haight-Ashbury rose to fame during the Summer of Love, and the strong hippie vibes live on in a big way. Visit the former homes of The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and more on a musical tour with Wild SF or a Flower Power Walking Tour. Afterwards, browse the vintage shops and quirky cafes or head to Barrel Head Brewhouse for some amazing craft beer.
Fillmore
For the best of San Francisco’s music scene, head to Fillmore. Visit the area’s most famous venue, aptly named The Fillmore, for regular shows from major artists as well as great local acts, or enjoy bottomless pomosas (sparkling wine and pomegranate juice) during the Sunday gospel brunch at 1300 on Fillmore.
North Beach
Known as San Francisco’s Little Italy, North Beach is full of charm, character, and fantastic homemade Italian food. An easy walk from hotels in Fisherman’s Wharf, this area is filled with hole in the wall bars and family-run restaurants that have been in the area for decades. On a clear day, head to the famous Coit Tower for 360 views of the city. After dinner, head to the wildly entertaining show, Beach Blanket Babylon for musical comedy. Believe it or not, this famous SF show is the world’s longest running musical revue.
The Castro
The Castro is undoubtedly one of the most defining neighbourhoods of San Francisco and not to be missed on a visit to this city. Recognised as “The Gay Capital of The World”, The Castro is home to many historically significant events relating to the LGBTQIA community. Get your day drink on with drag brunch at Lookout and enjoy this spectacular part of town.
