While there may be little similarity between Australia and Canada’s Yukon Territory, it seems we can’t get enough of it. It’s like Hermione and Ron from Harry Potter, opposites attract. That’s why Australians have been heading to Canada’s Northwest in record numbers.

Wild, mountainous, and teaming with adventure activities, the Yukon is a year-round dream destination. Nicknamed the ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’ the region’s 24/7 daylight practically doubles your mid-year holiday time.

We’ve selected our top five ways to slay your vacay in the Yukon Territory.

SUMMER NIGHTS

KARRYON_midnight_sun_yukon_territoryIf you thrive in the great outdoors, then summer in the Yukon Territory is a must. The midnight sun is so energising you’ll comfortably sleep less. That means more time camping alongside the waterways or hiking the spectacular mountain ranges. Tombstone Territorial Park and Kluane National Park are standouts.

For the ultimate antidote to stress, head to the area’s undisturbed rivers and lakes. The Yukon delivers, whether you’re up for a languid canoe trip, or thrilling whitewater kayak expedition.

POLAR PILGRIMAGE

KARRYON_dog_sledding_yukonAs Newton said, “What goes up must go down”. In the Yukon, this is true for both daylight hours and temperatures. The sub-Arctic winter temps equal one key thing – snow! It’s not just the usual skiing and snowboarding opportunities, but advanced adventures like dogsledding and ice fishing. Perfect for Instagram humble-brags too!

Aurora borealis is the most desired natural night sky phenomenon on any traveller’s list. Aka the Northern Lights, the clear Yukon skies are perfect to witness the spellbinding swirl of colours dance across the sky. View from mid-August to mid-April. We love the Northern Lights Resort and Spa for its stargazing-from-the-hot-tub opportunity.

WILDERNESS CITY

KARRYON_whitehorse_yukon_territoryThe unique heritage of Whitehorse inspires with its colourful buildings and waterfront location. Once attractive for it’s physical treasures, the Wilderness City is now adored for its entryway to the territory’s natural treasures. To uncover the secrets of Yukon’s capital, check out the MacBride Museum and wander the city to uncover its outdoor artwork.

PARIS OF THE NORTH

KARRYON_bombay_peggys_dawson_city_yukonPerhaps not that closely related to the real Paris, the ‘Paris of the North’ still deserves an oh-la-la. Dawson City offers historic buildings, wooden boardwalks, and hearty explanations on why 100,000 prospectors came to chase gold. For a chance to walk in the footsteps of the fortunate and the foolhardy join a panhandling tour and try your luck.

Use your real gold (aka Canadian $$$) to throw down at Bombay Peggy’s. This 1900-built converted brothel has been restored to its Victorian elegance. Minus the seedy undertones that once made it famous for all the wrong reasons. Stop by for a micro-brewed beer or stay the night.

GRIN & BEAR IT

KARRYON_yukon_wildlife_preserveWishing to see a grizzly bear on your trip? You can also add bison, caribou, and moose to the list. In fact, these animals outnumber Yukon’s residents by the thousands.

Spot 13 Canadian mammals and nearly 100 bird species in their natural habitat at the 700-acre Yukon Wildlife Preserve. Supporting the preserve also assists in caring for injured and orphan animals.
