Cosy up in the cool of a Canadian winter with snow adventures, festivals and one of a kind lodging that you can shake a Christmas tree at!

November to April is when the winter fun in Canada begins. And there is a serious amount of fun to be had in this wonderful place, particularly when you branch out on a multi-destination exploration of Banff, Lake Louise and Yellowknife.

SNOWSHOEING, SNOWMOBILING AND SNOW MUCH MORE

The first flurry of snow fall in Banff and Lake Louise brings a whole world of adventure to this region, and of all the many things Canada excels at, snow adventures top the list!

Get your adrenaline fix aboard a snow mobile as you zip along the sparkling alpine trails against a mountainous backdrop, or strap on a pair of snowshoes which will see you padding your way through peaceful powder.

For the dog lovers (and there are a few of us about), team up with these gorgeous creatures on a dog sledding adventure and witness them in their element as they bound through the shimmering landscapes of Lake Louise.

A day of activity is best tempered with a plunge in the steamy mineral waters of Banff Upper Hot Springs – relaxation with a view.

WINTER WONDERLAND FESTIVALS

The weather outside is not so frightful and winter festivals are just so delightful… especially those in Lake Louise and Banff.

January sees a touch of alchemy sprinkled over the Lake Louise landscape in the form of the Ice Magic Festival. Check out the precision and artistry of the ice sculpting competition and spot the finished pieces crop up amid a curious world of ice bars, castles and carvings.

Around the same time of year, the Tribute to Craft Spirits Festival invites you to eat and drink your way through the burgeoning gourmet scene in Lake Louise and Banff via exclusive cocktail and restaurant menus. The 12-day event concludes with a two-day outdoor feast on Bear Street. Cheers to that!

NEXT LEVEL UNIQUE ACCOMMODATION

And where to rest your head during Canadian winter? Where the royals would, of course. During their Royal Tour of Canada in 2011, Wills and Kate were hosted at Blachford Lake Lodge in Yellowknife, an off-grid, eco-experience.

This place is so remote that all food, facilities and furnishings are flown onto the premises. Choose between staying in the private guest rooms of The Main Lodge or go even more rustic with a private log cabin a short walk away.

Get active with snowshoeing, ice skating and igloo building by day and seeking out the magical aurora of Yellowknife by night.

Or perhaps you want to see where history meets luxury at Fairmont Chateau. Dropped amid sugar dusted alpines and mountain peaks, this fairy tale hotel and spa is located on the edge of Lake Louise so is lucky enough to have both mountain and lake views.

GETTING AROUND AND ABOOT

Navigating the Canadian wilderness is surprisingly easy. Lake Louise and Banff can be combined with destinations such as Vancouver city in Western Canada and spotting the auroras of Yellowknife.

Making your way from one snowy paradise to the next is so simple! There are daily flights from Vancouver or Calgary which connect all areas, so you can relax knowing your next destination is just a stone’s throw away.

Sounds dreamy right? The experts at Viva Holidays can talk you through the options so you’re not overwhelmed by all the amazing choices. PLUS complete the Canada webinar/quiz training and you could earn  $40 TRIP dollar$!
