Aeromexico plane carrying 101 people crashes near an airport in Mexico

Mexican airline Aeromexico has confirmed that there were no fatalities after one of its passenger planes crashed near an airport in Mexico shorly after take off this morning.

Mexican airline Aeromexico has confirmed that there were no fatalities after one of its passenger planes crashed near an airport in Mexico shorly after take off this morning.

Ninety-seven passengers and four crew were on board Flight AM2431 when the plane, en route to Mexico City, fell from the sky near the General Guadalupe Victoria International Airport in Durango.

The cause of the acccident is still unknown at this stage, but the head of Mexico’s Transport Department Gerardo Ruiz Eparza said “the plane fell upon takeoff.”

Eighty people have been injured, at least two critically, a spokesperson for Durango’s Health Department told Mexican TV channel Milenio.

The nationalities of those injured is not yet known.

Aeromexico said in an offical statement that their priority was to ensure the safety of the customers and crew on board.

“At the moment we don’t have any reports of deceased people. We are working with the appropriate authorities for the medical care of the passengers and crew.”

The airline went on to say that the families of all affected were in their thoughts.

First photos from the scene show a smoking but seemingly relatively intact plane lying on its belly in a field with lines of ambulances are waiting at the site.

The plane involved has been confirmed as an Embraer 190 which known for it’s strong safety record.

Aeromexico is the flag carrier airline of Mexico and hasn’t had a fatality in over 30 years.
