Air New Zealand rolls out bag tracking across all domestic & international flights

After a trial period earlier this year, Air New Zealand has extended its live bag tracking feature to all Air NZ app users from today, allowing passengers to follow their luggage from check-in to arrival in-destination.

After a trial period earlier this year, Air New Zealand has extended its live bag tracking feature to all Air NZ app users from today, allowing passengers to follow their luggage from check-in to arrival in-destination.

Air New Zealand introduced its baggage tracking program in April 2023 for select domestic flights, extending the pilot program to 25 per cent of app users and five per cent of users on short international flights in May.

Passengers on the airline’s domestic and international services will now be able to track the last recorded status of their bag through the airport processing system, onto the aircraft and when it arrives at their destination.

Air New Zealand Chief Customer & Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty said the in-app baggage tracking and reporting features will make travel more seamless for customers.

“Since April, over 8,000 customers have successfully tracked their checked-in baggage in our trial phase with the in-app feature. We’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback from customers who have tested the feature, too,” she said.

“In the unlikely event of your baggage taking a detour, the app now provides customers with the ability to report delayed or damaged baggage and monitor the status of an existing report.

“Customers can also submit a report via our website and receive updates on their claim status by email.”

The carrier follows the lead of United Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, which all integrate real-time baggage tracking into their mobile apps and have done so for over a decade.

Virgin Australia is the first Australian airline to offer bag tracking, which it debuted in August 2023 after a trial on Brisbane-Sydney flights in mid-May.
