Cathay Pacific's more "bag" for your buck baggage policy

Shoppers rejoice! Christmas has come early for you guys with the recent announcement that Cathay Pacific has revised its baggage policy and upped its allowance across the board by 10 kilograms.

Shoppers rejoice! Christmas has come early for you guys with the recent announcement that Cathay Pacific has revised its baggage policy and upped its allowance across the board by 10 kilograms.

That’s right: Economy Class passengers flying with Cathay Pacific (or Dragonair) will now have 30kg of baggage allowance to play with, whilst Premium Economy, Business Class, and First Class will see its baggage allowance increased to 35kg, 40kg, and 50kg, respectively.

In addition to the increased check-in baggage allowance, Cathay Pacific (and Dragonair) have also lowered their excess baggage charges, in what has to be some of the greatest news for shopping fanatics and chronic over-packers.

And when you think of all the shopping options in Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific’s hub city, we’re pretty sure the retailers in the Pearl of the Orient will be about as equally chuffed.

Here’s a look at just how much luggage you’re now allowed to take on your flight when flying with Cathay Pacific.

And here’s what you’ll pay if you still can’t control your insatiable shopping urges and still manage to go overweight on the baggage scales:

In addition to the enhanced check-in baggage policy, Dragonair will also increase its carry-on baggage allowance (currently at 5kg in all classes) to match that of Cathay Pacific. The new allowance for passengers travelling in Economy and Premium Economy will be increased to 7kg; Business Class and First Class passengers will enjoy allowances of 10kg and 15kg respectively.

The enhanced check-in baggage allowance will be applicable to all air tickets issued or exchanged on or after 15 September 2016, while the new carry-on baggage policy will be effective from 15 September 2016.

In other news, Cathay Pacific released its 2016 interim results, recording an attributable profit of HK$353 million for the first six months of 2016. This compares to a profit of HK$1,972 million for the same period in 2015. Earnings per share were HK9.0 cents compared to HK50.1 cents for the first six months of the previous year.

These results reflect an operating environment of economic fragility, intense competition, weak currencies in some markets, and other factors.

“We expect the operating environment in the second half of the year to continue to be impacted by the same adverse factors as in the first half.  The overall business outlook therefore remains challenging.”

John Slosar, Chairman, Cathay Pacific.

However, despite the challenging operational environment, Cathay Pacific remain committed to managing capacity and making further improvements in operations efficiency, as well as continuing to be vigilant on costs.
