Just when you thought you’d heard every possible reason for flight delays – strikes, computer outages, dragging passengers, etc. – an elderly woman shocked everyone by throwing coins into a plane’s engine.

The woman, believed to be in her 80s, was boarding China Southern Airlines’ Flight380 from Shanghai to Guangzhou when she must’ve mistaken the aircraft’s engine for a wishing well – they’re both circular so I guess I see the resemblance.

She, along with her husband, daughter and son-in-law, were making their way up the boarding stairs when she was seen tossing coins in the direction of the engine, South China Morning Post reported.

Why? Well, apparently the woman believed it would be a “blessing” and bring “luck” to the flight.

Fellow passengers notified China Southern staff who sent a maintenance crew to inspect the aircraft part where they found nine coins.

The plane was cleared for take off at around 5.52pm, five hours after it was originally scheduled to depart.

What the oddest reason you were given for a delayed flight?
